it. Should you have print disabled students (blind, profound
dyslexics, etc.) in your school. There is a service from the
University of Georgia that can provide accessible versions of
textbooks and other materials to you.
Schools join the The Alternative Media Access Center (AMAC) and then
can request production of existing print books which will be delivered
n a range of accessible formats.
Here are some other similar resources as well. Most of these will
require that dyslexic students have a medical diagnosis of dyslexia
from a doctor and have the applications signed by such.
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (http://www.rfbd.org) which can
also be used. Provides a wide range of textbook and professional text
in DAISY digital talking book format. These books will require special
playback devices which RFB&D can advise you on.
National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. (http://www.loc.gov/nls/
) Part of the Library of Congress provides books on tape and in DAISY
free to qualified persons. Players and books are delivered postage
free and has mostly recreational reading materials.
Bookshare.org (http://www.bookshare.org) provides text only DAISY
files of current materials made from publisher supplied and ORC scans
of books. Many new titles. Must be read on DAISY playback devices
supporting text to speech or on computers.
Beyond Books, Beyond Barriers a project of the Association for the
Blind of Western Australia, Curtin University and the State Library of
Western Australia. A library of over 30,000 text that will be
transformed into various accessible formats on request. Unlike the
other resources here this service is open to all users disabled or
not. You do not need to be Australian to use it. (Full disclosure
here, I wrote their software systems used for this.)
Information on DAISY can be found here: http://www.daisy.org/ which
has lists of DAISY software. A free MacOS player usable on with the
Beyond Books, Beyond Barriers books can be found at http://www.cucat.org/projects/olearia/
