Re: USB Drive Policy

We do not have specific policies in place. However, our school has a
code of conduct for all behavior (not just when using the technology) as
well as a pretty standard Authorized Use Policy both of which students
and parents sign.

Our overriding school policy is that students are expected to behave
appropriately and if they do not, we will deal with the inappropriate
behavior. =20

I have updated antivirus on the computers and a radius server to help
with wireless and vpn authentication. Beyond that we rely on students
acting appropriately and teacher monitoring behavior.

camera storage/ning

Hi,

I hope everyone has been enjoying summer. Am always fond of saying summer
hasn't ended yet, even though we returned for faculty meetings last week,
and students return this Wednesday.

My office mates and I are looking for a solution to house our burgeoning
supply of video cameras, chargers, boom mics, and related paraphernalia.
If any of you has a storage solution you like, please would you pop over
to the ISENet – the Ning – and post a photo so we can see your solution.
Here's the link to my Ning post: http://tinyurl.com/645o2l

If you haven't been over to the Independent School Educators Network
(http://isenet.ning.com), there are some interesting conversations going
on and some that have just gotten started: Wordle, projects that folks are
working on this year, Google Apps, brain based education, teacher
databases, and over 60 groups, at least one of which is bound to be of use
to you!

I've found these listservs (ISED and NYCIST) to be excellent providers of
information, and the Ning to be an equally excellent source of dialogue
about a wide range of issues related to teaching and learning. Hoping to
see you over there!

And thanks for whatever info you might share!

Cheers,
Laurie

Re: USB Drive Policy

We give all 6-8th graders a USB drive at the start of the year. They are
required to bring it - or the new ones they buy when they loose the old one
:-) - to all of their classes.
Have been doing this for many years and have been very happy.

Our AUP covers policies for computer use - nothing special needed for USB
drives.

Re: USB Drive Policy

"You're kidding, right? A policy on USB drives? Back in the "old days" did we
have policies on floppy disks?"

More than a few did. These kinds of policies often exist in the space between when a technology becomes available and a suitable level of protection and social norming can be sorted out.

External Storage represents 4 basic threats: Malicious code (i.e. viruses) ,bootable infrastructure (i.e. OS or web browsers to hide activity or circumvent controls), inappropriate content (i.e. porn, illegal music sharing), theft of IP or sensitive information (i.e. download student database or all papers for a given class).

The expectation is that all of these should be dealt with by schools making a policy unnecessary.

1. Have antivirus per machine and enough network monitoring to raise red flags if something gets through.
2. Lock down BIOS/Firmware to prevent booting and reasonable proxy/firewall controls to prevent circumvention.
3. Discipline policy handling bringing inappropriate material to school regardless of whether it comes on a flash drive, in a magazine, or on a widget that has yet to be invented.
4. Controls on school critical info.

None of these systems has to be, or can expected to be bullet-proof as long as you are making reasonable efforts towards them, you do not need a USB policy. If you do not have the budget, time, or expertise to implement them, then you may need guidelines on USB usage to remind people of the polices they could be violating through USB flash usage. Policies focus on behavior and should be timeless, guidelines clarify policy in relation to specific technologies.

Sadly every non-academic environment I have worked in has had policies/prohibitions on external storage devices. So schools have an opportunity to be ahead of the curve on this, at least until they are force take up more loco parentis/law enforcement duties.

Re: USB Drive Policy

Talk about control freaks, do you have a notebook policy too? You
never can tell what kind of "inappropriate content" might be in a
notebook.

Seriously we use USB drives exclusively. that is to say we provide no
network storage or logins and all the computers, we use Macs with
VMware to provide windows and linux. are re-imaged every night so we
don't worry about all the windows viruses anyway.

Each student has a pen drive or drive. They are expected, in fact
forced to, use a different kind of computer every third day. Mac,
Windows and Linux, and must be able to open their documents on any of
those platforms. Many of our student use Google apps to avoid the
whole USB drive issue.

You're kidding, right? A policy on USB drives? Back in the "old days" did we
have policies on floppy disks?

We *sell* USB drives in our Campus Shop, along with blank DVDs, blank CDs,
and that old dinosaur I've already referred to - floppy disks.

From my first day at Manlius Pebble Hill, 16 years ago, we *required*
students to buy three floppy disks: one for their work and two to back the
first one up onto. And this was back in the days of the Apple II and 5.25
inch disks. Later, when a consultant came in with this new thing called
Citrix, which he said would enable us to avoid disk-borne viruses by having
everyone work off a central server, I laughed. He apparently hadn't thought
of the Internet.

Inappropriate content on USB drives? What about inappropriate content in the
kid's three-ring binder or stuffed in the bottom of the backpack? Kids who
want to will always find some way to bring the stuff in.

If you're going to teach the kids how to use the technology properly, then
you need to teach them how to use it the way it's *designed* to be used,
while also teaching them what they ought not to do. USB drives and all sorts
of other portable storage devices are part of the equation of how the
technology is designed to be used. But enough here. Let me insert here what
I said in our official newsletter to parents, "The Icebox:"

This spring, Brian Lee, director of information services, and I visited a
local school district to see how they handled maintenance and set-up of that
district's thousands of computers, which include the machines in computer
labs, as well as the laptops given to teachers.

We were obviously impressed by (and a tad envious of) the district's
resources. But we were also able to see that we have something they don't,
and it's a fundamental difference between MPH and many of the public schools
in the area. What we have is trust in those who are using our computers.

As we watched their technicians set up the computers, we became aware of how
many limitations they put on the computers, of how many things they don't
allow their users to do. CD burning is disabled, for instance, because
someone *might* make an illegal copy of a music CD. Even the ability to play
music was disabled on many computers, because, we were told, "You don't need
to do that when you're supposed to be studying."

"Parental Controls" were set for all the computers. Even the computers given
to faculty members had these limitations. When I mentioned in passing that I
used my own personal laptop at MPH, one of the technicians asked why MPH
would even allow a machine we didn't control to be on our network.

The trust we have in our users and the freedom we give them make us more
like a small college than a Pre-k through 12 school. We trust our users to
use our technology wisely and appropriately. While we know there will always
be a few who push the limits, we see those students as exceptions and don't
use them as a reason to disable every cool feature our computers have. Quite
the contrary, we encourage our students to explore, to innovate, to try new
things with our computers. I want my students to teach *me* stuff, and they
often do. For that to happen, I have to trust them to use the technology we
provide to its full capacity. I have to give them the freedom to engage in
uses that some people might consider frivolous.

When the occasional misuse of that freedom and trust occurs, MPH chooses to
use those "incidents" as teachable moments, dealing with them not by
revoking freedom and trust, but by further educating students on the safe
and appropriate use of technology.

This trust, this freedom, and this constant using of the teachable moment
are among the reasons I love MPH, both as a teacher and as a parent.

And as Stan Lee used to say, 'nuff said.

Re: Time-limiting software

Jenni,
In the May edition of our ChildrenOnline.org newsletter we discussed a
variety of parental control software. This included time-limiting
software. The free newsletter is available in pdf form on our website,
ChildrenOnline.org. The links, however, will not work.

Here is a link for directions on setting up the time-limiting feature in

K12 Open Minds Reminder - Sessions announced!

This is just a quick (and final) reminder that the K12 Open Minds
conference is fast approaching. See http://www.k12openminds.org for more
details - this is one of the few conferences devoted to Free and Open
Source Software in K-12 education.

There are two updates worth mentioning. First, the preliminary sessions
list is now available at http://www.k12openminds.org/sessions - check it
out and consider joining us. Also, Alex Inman of the Whitfield School
will be one of the featured speakers, along with Dr. David Thornburg and
Chris Lehman.

Second, the deadline for rooms at the conference rate of $97 a night has
been extended to Tuesday, Sept 2. After that, the room rate will
increase dramatically. So if you are planning to attend, book a room now
(see the "Hotels" link on k12openminds.org). You should be able to book
online all through the weekend.

I know that time is short, but we hope you will consider joining us in
Indy for this event.

Cheers,
Vern Ceder, K12 Open Minds Planning Committee

Re: time-limiting software for home computers

This functionality is actually built into Leopard (OS 10.5). Check
out the parental controls that you can set on each account.
Specifically the Time Limits tab. You can set the number of hours
that the computer can be used, both weekday and weekends. There is
also a Bedtime setting that allows you to set times when the computer
is unavailable.

One thing to note - this restricts access to the computer, not just
the internet.

The trouble with these kinds of test is what do you do witha student
who simply can not ever pass them? And where does it end why not test
to see if you can ride a bike, run a mile in under 10 minutes, type as

Bob - Our school has a "swim evaluation" that is a graduation
requirement. Students are asked to swim a length of the pool and tread
water for a specified period of time in sweatpants and a t-shirt. This

Enrollment

Dear Friends:

Our firm has been engaged by a major foundation that has interest in the
effect that the economy is having on independent school enrollment.

They have asked us to determine if enrollment has dropped in any measurable
way at schools in certain regions of the country or at certain types of
schools. They have particular interest in New England Schools, Middle Atlantic
Schools and Rust Belt Schools, They are also looking at whether school type has had
any effect on enrollment based on the current economy.

This study may result in grants to schools that have had statistically
meaningful enrollment declines and that can show significant and serious cost saving
measures.

Please share any meaningful information with me directly by email or snail
mail.

Thanks,

Hi All,

I would like to know how everyone may be handling off-site backups. The
days of someone taking a tape home is not a best practice and just seems
wrong.
I'm talking about sensitive data that is critical to school operations
such as constituent, student, and financial information. The problem
with
just picking an offsite storage location or person, is the private and
sensitive data that is contained in these backups.

I'd like to know if someone has come up with an inexpensive, secure way
of handling this.

Computer Lab Mgmt Software?

Hi.

What are people using for computer lab management software?

My school has always handled machines individually, which takes time away
that could be spent on other projects. I'm looking just for something basic
that does basic app installations and remote control.

I've used Symantec/Norton Ghost as well as the Altiris suite, but it's been
+5 years since I've played with either one.

Thanks.

Re: Mapping alumni

Hello,

Have a look at DIY Map, at this address: http://www.backspace.com/mapapp/

Quote: DIY Map is a clickable, zooming map written in Flash and
colored by data from an external text file.
The external data file makes it easy to customize and update state
colors, add points, and use the same Flash file many times in the same
Web page with different data sets.

Mapping alumni

Hello,
I am looking for a product or web service that can display the location of
alumni throughout the world once they have registered in our alumni
database. Perhaps a legend would appear showing where a lot of alumni are
concentrated.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

International Maths Olympiad for k-8

Dear Maths lovers and educators,

=20

It is soon that time of year when the International Living Maths =
Mathletics
Olympiad takes place. This is the only Olympiad in the world that =
caters
for learners from grade K-8 and last year there were just over 100 000
participants (5000 from UK and USA). Please note that we are =
introducing a
GRADE 8 paper this year. High Schools are welcome to register for the
Olympiad.

=20

By way of introduction, We are an NGO that is committed to spreading the =
Joy
of maths to as many learners and educators as possible. We work closely
with the Hip2B2 TV show and magazine, we are maths advisors to the local
sciencentre, we regularly run learner and educator workshops (most =
recently
for the Department of Education) and we take part in all the national
Science weeks as well as the National Scifests. We aim to provide =
useful
teaching materials to assist teachers to spread the joy of maths to =
their
learners.

=20

The Mathletics Olympiad materials are placed on a mini CD and mailed out =
to
any school that would like the CD (FREE OF CHARGE). The CD contains ALL =
our
past papers since 2000 (with worked solutions), this year=92s papers as =
well
as the worked solutions. Apart from this, we have included folders with
additional resources (over 800 fabulous educational website links, =
printable
worksheets, etc) that are free for you to make use of in class. Our
Olympiad is only one round and your school has about a month to write =
the
papers =96 thus fitting into your school=92s programme. The papers are =
aimed at
learners of all abilities (for the first =BE) and then the talented =
learners
(for the last =BC). =20

=20

The Olympiad is supported by Grant Thornton =96 a firm dedicated to =
improving
the levels of maths in our country. We are also supported by TRULY
calculators and together we have produced the DOMINATOR =96 an =
affordable
scientific calculator that is endorsed by Living Maths and will be =
offered
to schools at excellent rates. =20

=20

Please feel free to visit our website to register for the Olympiad. =
Once
you register, you will then be on our database for good! We will =
continue
sending you the Olympiad CD=92s annually. If you would like to learn =
more
about the event, please visit www.lvingmaths.com and click on Olympiad =
2008.
You are welcome to forward this email to any schools that you feel may
benefit from this information.

We are in faculty meetings this entire week and it will be hard for me to
respond to emails and voicemails during the day. Thank you for
understanding.

Sometimes less is more, sometimes not

Don,

The feature/function sacrifices you would have to make to get down to
one system will almost surely be worse than supporting a handful of
systems that do what you want them to and making them play nice
together. Instead of focusing on a particular number of solutions,
you might be better off focusing on the right or "right enough"
solutions and getting down to the smallest number that makes sense,
even if it is not one or two. But even if you could get down to one
solution, you are then so heavily invested in it -- and the vendor
who provides it -- that you risk becoming unable to adapt to your
dynamic school ecology.

This becomes even more critical for schools that serve kids preK-12,
when systems need to serve the widest possible array of needs. I noted
that your school is adding a Lower School next year, which will make
this process tougher, if only for grade reporting alone.

PowerSchool does what it's designed to do reasonably well. Doing
traditional letter grades, attendance, empowering office staff to do
customized reports, sorting student information, doing it over the web
--- and so that's what we use it for. But it doesn't take well to the
kind of bending and twisting most independent schools either want or
need for other purposes. We've run it here for a few years alongside a
number of FileMaker applications without any major issues other than
those Pearson sometimes creates unwittingly. We also have to monkey
with it to feed an ever-changing array of data to evolving University
systems; when we can't figure out how to do this ourselves, we've
turned to Richard James of Phoenix Learning and he's provided solid
help.

Good luck. I've found this part of the IT leader's job the most
challenging and least rewarding in the ten years I've been doing this.
I hope you have more fun with it.

Yes. There's not a whole lot out there, but Bell Commander from Acrovista =
software seems to work quite well, though it is long in the tooth. Also =
there is no Mac client or server. On the Mac side I haven't seen any good =
packages, and definitely not any that do both (PC/Mac) from a centralized =
location/control.
