Re: One Answer to Pat Bassett's Closing Question in his January Blog Post

Good Sunday morning. I'd rather see this discussion focus on the creativity=
side of Fred's post on heads of school rather than the compensation side. =
I'm going to argue that, for so many reasons, there is no connection betwee=
n the two. IMHO, the greatest constraint placed on the creativity of school=
heads is external constituencies, alumni and parents. The former want to r=
emember their school exactly as it was, and the latter want the school to b=
e exactly as they perceived it when they made the decision to send their ch=
ild. For us, that presents an interesting dilemma. As creative as our head =
might wish to be, parents want us to stick to the basics they believe will =
provide their children with the best opportunity for admission to a prestig=
ious college. While these parents (and alumni) do respond positively to inc=
reased integration of technology, curriculum innovation, improved facilitie=
s, and "co-curricular" enhancements to student life, these same parents are=
the first to complain about these changes whenever the roadmap for their c=
hild is altered and/or the desired outcome is not achieved. So, what does t=
he head of school do when he or she has a vision for the institution, but c=
annot realize that vision without losing key customers to the school down t=
he street that might be a bit less "creative?"

P.S. In Fred's defense, I know there are schools that are turning the heads=
of parents by helping them understand what a good 21st century K-12 educat=
ion is. I agree that the heads of those schools should be rewarded for prom=
oting paradigm changes if they are successful, and the rest of us should li=
sten carefully to what they have to say.

Fred,

You seem to be following only part of the science in focusing on money. (An=
d since you started a thread about this a while ago, it seems to be a parti=
cular focus of yours.) Yes, Pink does talk about the dangers of extrinsic m=
otivation, a la Alfie Kohn. And I happen to agree with this notion. But he =
also talks about the key factors of purpose and autonomy. Perhaps the issue=
is not the money heads are earning, but the fact that overly involved boar=
ds and increasingly demanding constituents are stripping away the pure sens=
e of purpose and level of autonomy that heads have had in the past.

As one who is about to become a first-time head, money is not pulling me to=
the position. At the risk of sounding trite, it really is a calling.

Also, if money is the problem, then how do you explain the number of teache=
r who don't exercise creativity in their classrooms?

I'm just following the science, and a little logic. I could well be wrong,
which is one reason it would be nice to have a frank and open discussion
about this topic.

Here is my thinking, in a simple syllogism.

Pat Bassett assures us -and he should know- that heads are not in the job
for the money but because in their hearts they care deeply about education,
kids and their schools.

The research on motivation, which Dan Pink has brought to the fore, seems t=

indicate unequivocally that allowing extrinsic motivation to get out of han=

is extremely dangerous and leads to terrible decision making.

Therefore head"masters", who in their hearts are educators and not CEOs,
will do what is best for education, kids, and their schools, and give back
the 25%, thus freeing their minds to make better decisions.

Here is what I think happened. Headmasters, through the business people on
their boards, became caught up in the false ideology of compensation that
has perverted much of the business world. This ideology, which almost led t=
o
a second great depression a year ago -with all the dark and horrible
consequences a financial collapse would have precipitated for our world and
our students- is still with us. My hope is that our heads can show the
wonderful leadership of which they are capable and start to lead us away
from abyss that lies at the end of false ideologies.

Phil,

I could well be wrong, but my sense is that if you gave back 25% of your
salary, you would send such a strong message to your board and your faculty,
that you might be a much better position to move forward with needed
changes.

Regarding the worry about job tenure. If things don't go well with your
board, couldn't you always go back to being a teacher?

It might make sense to reserve 25% of a head's salary for a bonus, the
amount of which would be determined by risks taken and goals achieved. As a
head, one way in which I am able to take modest risks is that my board is

life's a cinch") to convince key administrators to do so, we at The
Children's Storefront in Harlem now have our own YouTube channel at

marketing tool for our school chock full of videos by students, teachers

color chart if you don't know your color codes)
7.Click Preview tab.--If you like ...

Hi all,

I plan to be at Educon and will also be facilitating a conversation at the
conference about a study recently completed on backchanneling in educational
contexts.
More remarkably, my 17 year old daughter will be attending with me for the
third year in a row - she loves this conference!

It is wonderful that so many independent school educators will be attending;
I have rarely seen a conference where there is so much crossover between
public and independent schools.

If you are up for evaluating a third product I highly recommend
Schoology<http://www.schoology.com/>.
It was created three years ago as a learning management system that would
"combine a collaborative learning tool with a course management system" -
think Blackboard meets Facebook.

Recently Schoology decided to offer the main features of the system to
schools for free (more advanced features such as logo customization are
pay). We just got on board and are already quite impressed with the ease of
use and intuitiveness of the features. They welcome input from clients
and are constantly adding features - currently in the works is integration
with active directory.

If this is something that interests you, I can keep you informed of our
implementation and use. Hope this helps.

One Answer to Pat Bassett's Closing Question in his January Blog Post

In Pat's January blog post *Change Agency Leadership: =97 Why
Bother?<http://www.nais.org/about/article.cfm?ItemNumber=3D152810&sn.ItemNu=

*, he discusses school leadership and Dan Pink's ideas about motivation.

He ends his post with the following question.

"So, if Pink is right about the prime motivators, and I=92m right about our
schools cultures being the natural environment to cultivate and accelerate
those motivators, why is it that we don=92t see leadership more easily and
more often effecting change?"

Now Pat is a pretty smart guy, so one has to wonder if this isn't a
rhetorical question. I suspect he has his own ideas about why our school
leadership has become so risk averse.

I have my own opinion, which curiously, is also based on Pink's recent work=
.

In Pat's blog post he let slip that headmaster salaries have become
"increasingly competitive". I'll say they have! In a recent post to ISED I
shared the following data from NAIS reports.

The median salary of Heads, with inflation adjustment, increased 31.4%
between 1999-2009. During the same period the median salary of teachers,
with inflation adjustment, increased 5.8%.

Pink provides example after example in his book that extrinsic rewards are
very dangerous and often lead to highly perverse results. If you need more
than Pink's examples witness the near meltdown of the global economy brough=
t
about by some of the most highly paid people in the world.

In a recent interview<http://www.publicschoolinsights.org/carrots-and-stick=
s-are-so-last-century-conversation-author-dan-pink>Pink
noted:

"What the science shows is that these what I call =93if then=94 rewards=97=
=93if you
do this, then you get that=94=97could have a devastating effect on creativi=
ty
because they narrow our vision, rather than broaden it, which you need for
creative thinking. They can inspire people to think short term rather than
long term. They can cause some people to act unethically and take shortcuts=
.
And they can extinguish intrinsic motivation."

I believe Pink's work is clearly pointing at excessive headmaster
compensation as very likely being the answer to Pat's question.

There is an easy way to test this hypothesis. Headmasters could give
themselves a 25% salary cut this year (bringing them back into line with
recent salary increases of teachers) and we can all watch and see if we hav=
e
a little bit more creativity from our leaders next year.

We use WH for our web site and portal and we have several of the other WH
modules as well. We also use Senior Systems as our SIS. We're launching
Web Services very soon; which will provide seamless integration with key
data between WH and Senior Systems.

Lausanne Collegiate School (Memphis, TN) also has a channel - http://www.youtube.com/lausanneschool where we highlight videos by students, parents and staff. I highly recommend using channels as they permit you to "brand" with your school's colors and
look. You can also use services like http://www.involver.com to pull your YouTube videos straight into your Facebook page unless you are uploading directly to that page already.

We have hosted out own Moodle solution in house for the past 5 years.
We run it on Windows 2003 Server with IIS and MySQL. We hesitate to
move to a hosted solution because of bandwidth, single sign on, and file
management. Currently we allow teachers direct access to their course
files so they don't have to deal with the uploading mechanism in Moodle.

Youtube Channels

All,

I'm aware that Youtube provides 'free' channels to a select number of higher
education institutions... I'm curious to know if there are any independent
schools (K-12) out there that utilize a YouTube channel for school
communications, special evens, and classroom activities. If not YouTube, do
you use another service?

2-minute recording of Miss Teaff

Joe and Nic,
Ann Teaff needs to make a 2-minute recording that will be emailed to Melissa Wert who will incorporate it in a 2-minute video with pictures and music that highlights the accomplishments of Karen Douse for an NAIS presentation. Joe, is it possible to do
this recording on Monday. Ann will have the script. It has to be exactly 2 minutes. Melissa Wert may join us since she has done a draft of the video and has a sense of the pacing. Nic, I'm copying you so you can give email Joe the availability of Ann on
Monday.

After hosting Moodle on our servers for the past five years, we moved to
Remote Learner for hosting this year. We have also integrated our Google
Apps for Education accounts with our Moodle. We are not currently using
single sign on for the two, but will be changing this over the summer (I
hope).

We use Moodle in grades 2 - 12 and are very satisfied with it. We host =
it ourselves, and use Remote Learner for support.=20

Hello, Lavina,

I would recommend defining your priorities/what you want to accomplish from your LMS - most platforms that call themselves an LMS do very different things.

For a Sakai vendor, I would recommend rSmart: http://www.rsmart.com/

I do not have any recommendations for a Moodle vendor.

In evaluating platforms, you might want to look at http://atutor.ca/ -- it's also open source, and has a solid featureset.

Department Review

I would be grateful to hear from schools who have developed protocols for p=
eriodically reviewing the academic program by department. We imagine that =
this will involve some combination of internal self-study and a visiting te=
am from outside the school, but I'm sure this is a wheel that we don't need=
to reinvent, so whatever schools can offer in regard to process, recommend=
ations, and previous history will be happily received.

At Manlius Pebble Hill School, we are experimenting with Moodle with one =
teacher. We hope to get more teachers onboard to share their =
experience.

- Not using Sakai because of all the conferences I have been to, none of =
them had a session on Sakai
- From other districts, they had told me that Blackboard cost them =
$10,000+ a year to for the support and license. This is extremely cost =
prohibitive for us.
- Using Moodle because it's free and many other schools have been using =
it it.

Moodle:
Hosting it in house. It is as simple as setting up your own web server. =
Setup a cheap PC and install Moodle on it if you want to play with it.
