Re: Using Facebook for classroom projects

I brought 130 students and faculty together in an online social
network to debate issues surrounding the 2008 presidential election.
"The Great Debate of 2008" incorporates both a wiki and Ning. Students
contribute information and resources about campaign issues to the
Great Debate of 2008 wiki. They then join a moderated online social
network to meet other students involved in the project and partake in
online discussions, polls, surveys, and other activities.

The online social network is private since students reveal personally
identifiable information. The wiki is "protected," as outsiders may
view the pages but not edit them. The home page of the wiki outlines
the projects and provides guidelines for both student and teacher:

This project is featured in newly published The Socially Networked
Classroom by William Kist.
