Re: Math Curriculum Adoption

Two years ago we also did an extensive review of our math curriculum. We =
had been using a traditional math program (Scott Foresman) and decided we =
wanted a reform math. We looked at Chicago math and Investigations among =
others. Finally we chose Think Math and we love it. Here is some info: =
http://www2.edc.org/thinkmath/

Here was our process:

1. We put together a committee of lower school teachers (K-5), our math =
learning specialist and the math department head (K-12) as well as our =
math coordinator (see below)
2. We studied our ERB results and what we did not cover each year
3. We looked into different programs, looking at units and visiting =
schools using them
4. We piloted some units from Think Math
5. We chose Think Math. That summer we had one week of PD. One day was led =
by a person form the company. The other days were led by our math =
coordinator.
6. We hired the part time math coordinator (three days per week) to work =
with our teachers to implement the new curriculum. She helped keep them on =
pace, helped them teach lessons, and created lessons for differentiating =
and for the smart board. She also provided PD to teachers about how to use =
the different elements of the program
7. She is working this year again for us, doing the same. We wish she was =
full time.

I feel that the secret to success is this math consultant who can give =
support to the teachers. She is also working on developing benchmark =
assessments. This has been a bit frustrating, as the ones from Think Math =
are not good.

If you decide to look into Think math, I can put you in contact with our =
math coordinator.

We REALLY love Think Math.

This year our head of school has appointed a Math Task Force that is =
charged with looking at the overall math program at our K-8 independent =
school. One element of this process entails us reviewing our current =
lower school math curriculum (Investigations) to determine if it best =
meets the needs of our community. As we do this, the task force will also =
be reviewing other reputable curricula. While we have specific grade =
level benchmarks and a philosophy about how math should be taught/learned =
in mind; I am curious about what other independent schools are currently =
using for lower school math. If anyone else has gone through a recent =
adoption I would also appreciate hearing about your process and the names =
of texts you reviewed.

Thank you,
