Re: Your reputation online?

I have an example where blocking or protecting your online reputation =
can make things worse. In the tech community, there is a popular effect =
called the "Streisand Effect."

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect
The Streisand effect is an Internet phenomenon where an attempt to =
censor or remove a piece of information backfires, causing the =
information to be widely publicized. Examples of such attempts include =
censoring a photograph, a number, a file, or a website (for example via =
a cease-and-desist letter). Instead of being suppressed, the information =
receives extensive publicity, often being widely mirrored across the =
Internet, or distributed on file-sharing networks.

History:
Mike Masnick originally coined the term Streisand effect in reference to =
a 2003 incident where Barbra Streisand sued photographer Kenneth Adelman =
and Pictopia.com for US$50 million in an attempt to have the aerial =
photo of her house removed from the publicly available collection of =
12,000 California coastline photographs, citing privacy concerns. =
Adelman stated that he was photographing beachfront property to document =
coastal erosion as part of the California Coastal Records Project. As a =
result of the case, public knowledge of the picture increased =
substantially and it became popular on the Internet, with more than =
420,000 people visiting the site over the next month

Recent Examples: Horizon Realty suing for a Twitter Post
http://www.thestreisandeffect.com/200907/a-moldy-apartment-a-tweet-and-50=
000/

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/1688511,cst-nws-twitter28.article

Lesson:
Blocking bad PR can actually make things worse.

Note:
What makes this very different from a random online post is that Twitter =
is not anonymous. It's easier to find out who you are through a social =
networking site than a post where a user can remain anonymous.

"Generic Login" for WordPress MU?

We are thinking about using WordPress MU for teacher communications with
parents, i.e. for classroom newsletters and photo slide shows, homework
assignments, etc. In my mind, the ideal setup would be similar to what we
have done in the past using FirstClass: a "generic" login for parents
(i.e. one user name and password for all of them) to view these pages (and
not necessarily add comments). We could continue using FirstClass for
this, but WordPress offers a much nicer interface. In researching this I
have had a hard time figuring out if this can be done, so I am curious if
anyone knows that answer, or, even better, if anyone has actually done
this using WordPress MU. Thanks, Joe

How not to handle a Facebook incident at your school

For those looking for an object lesson, this is a good example of how not to handle cyberbullying via Facebook. It also presents a potentially interesting legal definition that anything password protected has a reasonable expectation of privacy. A good case to watch, although my favorite part is "several other students asked for their logins simply deleted their accounts using their cell phones, preventing this sort of intrusion".

The school does not have any. The students have them in their pockets. 3g and 4g
smart phones become more common every day. The latest iphone does HD video!! All
we have to do is convince our administrators to let them use them.

compatabilitty issues should be easy to work out if there are any.

We are looking at purchasing some new video cameras and someone brought up
the Flip Camera. What is the quality of the video and is the format
compatible with Windows Movie Maker? Thoughts about which model to
purchase? Would we be better off with traditional video cameras? We would
not be posting to YouTube; the cameras would be used by classroom
teachers, tutors and most likely students.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Tech Conference For Teachers By Teachers

Hi,

I know that many may be on vacation but hoped you might send this out to your faculty when they return in August. We are offering a 10% discount to schools who register for both days of the conference before August 1st.

During these tough budget times, we really need everyone's help in getting the word out about this tech conference and hope we will have the support of your teachers, administrators, and tech directors in schools nearby.

Please feel free to download and forward the .pdf version of the brochure to any educator who might be interested in attending (see url below). If you would prefer, I'd be happy to snail mail you our printed brochures, just let me know (off list-serv)
how many you'd like.

Creative Pursuits: Integrating Technology into 21st. Century Classrooms
Are you interested in exploring creative ways to integrate technology into your daily classroom lessons? Join us on Oct. 8th and 9th for a two-day, interactive technology conference designed specifically for you - a pre-school through secondary school
educator!

Many Langley workshops are led, not by instructional technologists, but by experienced classroom teachers who allow workshop attendees to actively participate in live tech-integrated lessons. Workshop topics cover a wide range of innovative technologies
such as pre-school robotics, hands-on videoconferencing strategies, personalized assessment systems, and electronic book readers like the Kindle DX. Each day of the conference kicks off with a keynote address from a leading technology expert, including
Don McNamee, ICT service manager for Kristin School in Auckland, New Zealand. Through a live videoconference, Mr. McNamee will share how new television tools such as Slingbox and Livestation can be put to good educational use and change the media
landscape, profoundly affecting the way our students see and understand the world around them. Come visit Langley School teachers and immerse yourself in a series of hands-on workshops that will engage your students and improve learning!

Additional information and registration details can be found here: [ http://www.langleyschool.org/creativepursuits/ ]http://www.langleyschool.org/creativepursuits/

The FirstClass iPhone app - 'unhide' the calendar and contacts containers

Well here is an interesting and curious easter egg.

If you triple-tap at the bottom of the FirstClass iPhone app's settings
page you can turn on an alarm which will provide a calendar icon and
contacts icon, and access to these items.

So, triple-tap on the version number in the lower left corner of the
settings page and you will turn the alarm on (whatever that is) and make
your calendar and contacts available. You may need to logout and log back
in before the icons appear amongst all the other FC icons.

The calendar interface is a little underdeveloped but it works.

There has been no official word from FirstClass about this hidden feature.
Since they haven't indicated that it does any harm I think it is
reasonably safe to give this a try, but you should be aware that they are
definitely not supporting this.

Hi---
I investigated windmills and thought the Windspire was really
interesting---it sure looks different

A complete Windspire 1.2 kW wind turbine typically costs between
$9,000 and $12,000, fully installed.
After rebates, the costs can be as low as $3,800, which is much lower
than comparable wind turbines and other alternative energy options.
The price includes the poles, inverter, wireless performance monitor,
and the hinged monopole.
A 30% federal tax credit and local rebates are available in some
areas. Payback is under 10 years.

It is designed to operate in areas with average wind speeds of at
least 10 mph (4.5 m/s), although it works best where average winds
exceed 12 mph (5.4 m/s).

Re: Collecting oral 'school history' stories from alumnae and former employees

Thanks, Fred. I haven't tried Call Recorder, but have dabbled with
Ambrosia's Wire Tap. I'll check it out.

Lately I've attempted to screencast Skype interviews using iShowU for
the Mac. (I am also going to try it with JingProject on my PC.) I want
to upload video interviews of history teachers discussing "best
practices" to the NCSS Community Network. The problem I'm having
screencasting these interviews is synching the video and audio. The
audio records a second or two behind the video.

Re: Social Bookmarking for Teachers

I've created a how-to "Social Bookmarking with Diigo" video tutorial
available at TeacherTube:
http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=88155&title=Social_Bookmarking_with_Diigo

I belong to several educator groups on Diigo including NCSS History,
Literacy and ICT, Ed Quotes, Language Learning and Technology, and
Classroom 2.0.

I'd recommend that your school form a group and that you create a
unique school tag for your bookmarks.

Re: Collecting oral 'school history' stories from alumnae and former employees

Tom,

Thanks so much for the great information!

Have you had tried using Skype? There is a little program for the Mac (and
others for Windows) called Call Recorder
(http://www.ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/) that allows Skype calls to be
recorded. Looks like it might be useful for doing interviews.

Re: Collecting oral 'school history' stories from alumnae and former employees

Fred, I've collected oral histories for various projects using a
combination Gcast, iPod, GarageBand, and Audacity. At issue is
quality versus access. It's best to initially record in a high quality
file format that you can later edit if needed or export as an .mp3
file. If you're going to combine files together and edit to create a
"show" with sound effects and such, than you'll need an audio editor
like Garageband or Audacity The problem is getting all participants to
record in a high quality file format. Some alumnae and former
employees likely live far away from Rye. Do they GarageBand or
Audacity on their computer? Do they know to use it? If not, do you
expect them to come to Rye CDS to be recorded?

If access to a recording tool is more important than audio quality
then you have many more options. I've had parents record into an iPod
voice memo via a portable mic. I've had others record directly into a
cell phone and upload to Gcast.com. Keep in mind these options have
limitations. Extracting voice memos from an iPod not synched to your
iTunes account is a hurdle. They also need the $40 mic to record.
Gcast is no longer free. And both sacrifice audio quality for
compression/portability.

Perhaps the simplest way to collect oral histories is via Vocaroo.com,
in beta. Simply record your voice on the Web and then email it or
embed it. It's accessible from anywhere and there's no learning curve.
The audio is not crystal clear, mind you, but you'll be able to
collect oral histories quickly from people in dispersed areas.

Re: social bookmarking and Flip Video

Good morning,
We are very happy with the Flip Video cameras we have. They easily take an
hour of video and the quality is amazing for the price. Our 4th graders took
to the software and editing without instruction.

Having used both Delicious and Diigo with various faculty this past year,
Diigo seems as if it is more robust for use within faculty. Not only does it
allow both "sticky notes: and highlighting, you can set up groups that would
allow whole group or small group dissemination of any bookmark. I have
experiemented with the education portion for a class that I am teaching this
summer. Since it keeps bookmarks private and visible only to members of the
group, when used with the toolbar that is optionally installed, it seems
ideal for use with students of a particular class.

Greetings all!

We've had very good experiences with Flips this year, but I also ran into the
problem when sharing the avi files. Our solution has been to convert the files
into wmv so they play in Windows Media Player and import into Movie Maker. We
use the free-download version of Any Video Converter for this purpose and for
other downloads. Not a perfect fix but quick and easy for anything I've wanted
to do so far...

Subject: Re: Flip + Re: Social Bookmarking + ISEnet groups

Marty,
I've also had positive experiences with the Flip, and think it's a great choice.
I did find that in order to import to Movie-Maker, I had to install the Flip
software on the computer I was using MovieMaker on, in order for the correct
codec to be there. In other words, I was not able to film with the Flip and then
use the Flip AVI files on a different computer that did not have the Flip
software installed. I wish I understood more about codecs. It would be simpler
if we could just push that codec out to all computers, rather than installing
the Flip software. My Flip is about 2 years old, so perhaps this problem no
longer exists with the newer models.

Ali,
I'd agree with others that Diigo is a cut above Delicious. I and some others
outlined those benefits on this wiki article: http://schoolcomputing.wikia.com/wiki/Why_We_Like_Diigo.
I have the diigo toolbar installed on all the computers I use. In the Chrome web
browser, the "toolbar" is a bookmarklet. The subscribable groups on Diigo are a
great feature.

All,
A recent addition the the ISEnet navigation has been to create a list of the k-8
grade level groups and k-12 subject areas. I'd love to see teachers across our
schools participate in these grade-level and subject-specific groups to dip
their toes into the power of Personal
Learning Networks:
