Re: Independent School Online Courses

Steve / Fred,

Here in North Carolina we are attempting to tackle this question/idea
head on as an association. On Thursday, April 2nd NCAIS' Commission on
Technology is offering the following @ Durham Academy in Durham, NC - If
anyone on the listserv has questions or ideas you wish for me to pass
along during this event (or if you are close to NC and want to attend)
please do!

----------------------FROM Linda Nelson, Executive Director for NCAIS
----------------------------
Dear NCAIS Leaders,

I am emailing to ask you to please consider sending one or more
representatives from your school to our upcoming conference on
blended/virtual learning environments.

"Blending Learning Environments: When Brick and Mortar Meet Virtual"
April 2nd , Durham Academy

This is a very important event in the life of NCAIS as we come together
to explore options for 21st Century Learning. Our goal is to have a
representative from each of our 84 schools in attendance so that we can
begin conversations about how we might work together as an association
to share resources and enable our digital learners to embrace their
native language of technology. This is a bold step that few
associations are taking but we believe it is important to begin
conversations and we invite and encourage you to be a part of this
historic event.

National and international leaders in the field including Apple, SAS,
and Virtual High School will join us - all we need is YOU! And, this is
not only for the tech-savvy - heads, division heads, curriculum
coordinators - anyone with an inkling of interest in 21st Century
Learning is welcomed! =20

We have reduced the cost for this event to $75.00 (early bird through
March 19th) and have limited partial scholarships available - so please
don't let budget constraints keep you away! (For scholarship assistance,
please contact the NCAIS office.) I encourage you identify the person or
persons who should represent your school, print this e-mail, walk down
to their office, and ask them to attend. (A personal invitation can make
all the difference!) It is an important step for NCAIS schools and we
need your involvement! Click below for detailed information or to
register.

I was surprised that there was not more comment on this post, and I
apologize for taking my own time to respond to it.

One of my dreams is to have a "cooperative" of independent schools that
can work with one another to offer outstanding online courses to
supplement and extend our curricula in new and exciting ways. As the
authors of Disrupting Class make so clear,
online courses are coming, and are coming in a big way.

As all of use struggle to help students with special needs, be they
advanced topic courses for those who work beyond the reach of our
curriculum, highly targeted courses in areas we can't offer, remediation
for learners with certain challenges - whatever
the need, online courses offer us another way to meet our kids where
they are. The current financial conditions, and environmental
sustainability, require that we seriously consider online learning.
