literature that will provoke controversy so as to help give our students the
tools to negotiate a sometimes uncomfortable world. The teacher must
confront the issue of racism head on and give both historical and modern
perspectives. We find that fifth graders are sophisticated enough to handle
this type of difficult material when it is addressed in a sensitive manner.
