We use a program called Accelerated Math, which allows you to customize and
individualize a math program for each student using the power of
technology...as we have students in the same class working at various rates
and grade levels. We use this through High School. The program goes
through calculus. This program does not replace the teacher...but wraps
around whatever program you are using...and helps the teacher to create,
track and modify the program.

We have also had students in HS use courses through Brigam Young University

Re: Anyone using Cymphonix

Greetings -

I've been evaluating this product for the last month. I had already tested
the Marshall-8e6 product and in a few days I will be testing the St. Bernard
Software iPrism box.

The biggest problem we had with the Cymphonix was distributing the local
cymdir executable that takes care of the single-sign-on process. The
distribution was fine, but we had some problems and it took us a while to
figure out that we had a problem with our Group Policy Object. All the
while, the Macs behaved just fine.

I like the interface (but don't like that it doesn't yet support Firefox or
Safari). I like the granular reporting and the ease of finding what I need
in the reports without having to wait too long.

I like the filtering and ability to associated filter policies to different
groups and users. I like that there is a web-based login to fallback to if
the SSO is not working (and for non-domain members on the network). I like
the bandwidth throttling, but I haven't really tweaked this yet. I haven't
found any showstoppers.

Right now, I strongly prefer the Cymphonix over the Marshall-8e6 solution.
And, for what it's worth, their initial quotes (for a three year agreement)
were within $100 of each other.

We'll see how the iPrism does...

solution to help shape our internet traffic and maximize our limited
bandwidth.

Our main goal is to prioritize teachers and educational web use over the
non-educational web traffic (streaming media ,ect) that is currently
taking place on campus. Ultimately I would also like to retire my linux
web proxy (squid) and would look to this device for our content
filtering as well.=20

Re: Print Queue Managers

Thank you for all of your suggestions. It's a great jump start in my
research to eliminate wasted print outs.

I'm leaning toward Papercut, but I also have an eye on Pharos. I look
forward to saving the school money and saving our trees.

Library Acquisition Policy

You need a system that has print release stations. We use PaperCut which o=
ffers several nice features including this one, although we don't have any =
of the print release hardware. It's on my list to investigate for this sum=
mer for exactly the reasons you describe.

We are currently using PrinterOn with print release stations in the
library and our large color MFP. I'm evaluating Pharos and UniFlow
which will provide a "follow me" print feature allowing the student to
retrieve their job from any printer.=20

Our current system allows students to print to 50 network printers
across campus with a single print driver (hot spot printing). The print
release stations do a great job reducing waste and jobs not retrieved in
24 hours are purged from the queue.

Setup enough appointments for all the laptops. Then student may sign up for those times. Keep track of those that do sign up and those that don't. Those that don't get it done, disable their accounts.

If you have a good schedule and can plan on doing so many a day, then I would think you would only need them one or two days. If a student missed the appointment - disable the account and have them reschedule at your convenience.

Re-orientation, I would think would only be necessary for new student or unless you have added a number of significant new items which have some complexity to them.

I think that you need to be very dictatorial about this process, otherwise it could be a nightmare.

Dear 1:1 Schools,

We're completing our 1st 1:1 year and beginning to formulate our summer
re-imaging plans. We know for sure that we will re-image every student
laptop. Our 1:1 program includes allowing students to store personal data
on the laptop. Our re-imaging will basically consist of installing the
School laptop standard image, so all personal data (i.e. iTunes) are the
responsibility of each student. The Tech Staff will not back up or
restore personal data. We're estimating that each student would be
without his or her laptop for one week while it's being re-imaged.

So, I would really appreciate your advice regarding the re-imaging
process. . .
When do you do it?
How long do you keep each laptop?
How do you ensure every student turns in his or her laptop ON TIME?
Do you do any "re-orientation" as part of the re-imaging process?
