Points for style bookmark While not especially well organized, this slim
volume offers solid guidance on handling Web-related style issues about
the book The Elements of Internet Style: The New Rules of Creating
Valuable Content for Today's Readers by EEI Press Editors EEI Press (with
Allworth Press), 2007 162 pages I have to confess to being a bit
confounded by The Elements of Internet Style: The New Rules of Creating
Valuable Content for Today's Readers. There's an expectation that any book
leveraging the strength of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style will
mirror the organizational and structural approach taken by that ubiquitous
reference guide. The Elements of Internet Style, though, is an odd mixture
of narrative text and Strunk-ish listings.

Nevertheless, The Elements of Internet Style has found a home with the
other reference books I keep within easy reach. Those chapters that do
provide quick access to preferred styles have enough value to earn a spot
with the Harper Dictionary of Contemporary Usage, Words into Type, The
Elements of Grammar, The Elements of Editing and Fowler's Modern English
Usage, not to mention my well-worn copy of Strunk and White.

I do wish the book were organized to make it easier to find a rule. For
example, suggestions on how to deal with abbreviations, currency, dates,
numbers and units of measure appear in a catchall chapter called "The
Rules Used to Matter. What Now?" So do rules on electronic citations (how,
in print, would you display the citation for a web site or a CD-ROM?). The
book does have a comprehensive index, which addresses some of the
problems. Nevertheless, I would have preferred it to be as easy as it is
to find advice on using the active voice in "Principles of Composition" in
Strunk and White.

Re: Kerio Mail server

We have switch from GroupWise to Kerio (switched our entire back-end
from Novell to Apple XServes) over three years ago and have found it
to be a great email solution. It is much easier to maintain and
administer and every bit as good as GroupWise. It integrates with our
Open Directory for authentication and I have only one "complaint" and
it has t o with how they count the number of users/accounts... I can't
get a real idea how they count them.

Google, you see, claims that they shouldn't have to turn over 12TB of data
about who watched YouTube videos because user data, including IPs, is
private user data.

Google can't play it both ways. Either our IP addresses and user data ARE
private (in which case we should have a LOT more protection from our
Moutain-View-based Big Brother) or they aren't. You can't say that they
aren't protected when it comes to selling targeted advertising, and then
claim it's private information when getting sued for copyright
infringement on YouTube. Google needs to have a consistent policy when it
comes to privacy and simply adding a link to a policy on their entry page
doesn't cut it.

QUERY: Man, A Course of Study

This is just to satisfy personal curiosity:

Is anyone out there, or does anyone know of any schools out there, that
are still using the original MACOS (Man, A Course of Study) curriculum? I
assume that materials would be getting pretty well worn out by now, but
does this survive anyplace?

Just curious.

homes.

Broadband adoption has kept even pace with previous years, but stalled
among America's poor, according to a report released this week.

Only 10% of Americans have dial-up connections at home, according to Pew.
Just 25% of American households with annual incomes of $20,000 or less had
broadband connections in their homes in April 2008. That's down from 28%
reported in that income bracket in March 2007.

Sixty-two percent of dial-up users said they don't want broadband.
Thirty-five percent said they would switch if the price of broadband
decreased. Nineteen percent said nothing would convince them to switch to
broadband.

About one-quarter of U.S. adults do not use the Internet. Half of them are
over 61 years old and most report lower-incomes than Internet users.
Thirty-three percent of those who do not use the Internet said they're
just not interested, 12% lack access, and 9% said it is too difficult or
frustrating. Seven percent said it is too expensive and another seven
percent called it a waste of time.

Summmary of Findings

Home broadband adoption increased from 47% from March 2007 to 55%
in April 2008.

Growth in broadband adoption was flat among the poor and African
Americans.

Broadband growth was strong among older and lower-middle income
Americans, as well as rural Americans.

Nearly one-third of home broadband users have a premium broadband
service that gives them a faster connection to the internet.

Monthly broadband bills are 4% lower in May 2008 than at the end of
2005, but monthly dial-up bills have risen.

Non-broadband users cite a number of reasons for not using the service
including availability, price, and lack of interest.

Non-internet users represent a large pool of potential broadband users,
but many are just not interested in getting online.

Library schools have been using jargon piled concept constructs with a liberal
amount of acronym style gravy to completely bemuddle the average professional
reader for a very long time.

Consider these examples:

Curing resistance to student research by infecting 'em with the plague: a
technology infused course of treatment.

Science and technology in standardization: a statistical analysis of merging
knowledge structures.

ARACU at Oxford: testing techniques approaches and equipment for assistive
technology.

What is user engagement? A conceptual framework for defining user engagement
with technology.

The role and effect of information technology in the creation and maintenance
of sustainable competitive advantage.

Empowering the OLAP technology to support complex dimension hierarchies.

The effects from technology-mediated interaction and openness in virtual team
performance measures.

I think we get the idea.

You might want to join LM_NET, the email list for 20,000 school =
librarians.
There's also AISL for independent school librarians, but their email =
list is
restricted to members (it's only $20 a year to join).

That being said, here are some suggestions from my experiences:

Professional Development Goals
- Focus on strategies for increasing collaboration between classroom
teachers and librarians - in planning meaningful research lessons as =
well as
keeping students interested in reading for pleasure.
- Become familiar with Web 2.0 applications and how they can be applied =
to
your library.
- Stay current on children's and young adult literature
- Get involved in staff development and training.

The other parts of the assignment are confusing to me - usually we are =
all
specialists in everything; however, as a Head Librarian, I deal with
personnel and budget as well as technology planning. For challenges and
problems - it's usually money and managing budgets; since tuition =
dollars
typically make up most of our operating budgets and we are not directly
responsible for grading students, librarians have to continue to prove =
their
worth in school settings. Becoming the place all teachers and students
flock to for technology, reading and lesson planning advice ensures our
future. Being involved in all aspects of the school is another way.

I work for La Jolla Country Day School. From 2000 to 2003 I was the =
Upper
School Librarian. This fall I came back and am now the head librarian. =
We
have four full time librarians including me and a full time assistant. =
We
have 1000 students in grades PreK-12.

You might want to join LM_NET, the email list for 20,000 school librarians.
There's also AISL for independent school librarians, but their email list i=
s
restricted to members (it's only $20 a year to join).

That being said, here are some suggestions from my experiences:

Professional Development Goals
- Focus on strategies for increasing collaboration between classroom
teachers and librarians - in planning meaningful research lessons as well a=
s
keeping students interested in reading for pleasure.
- Become familiar with Web 2.0 applications and how they can be applied to
your library.
- Stay current on children's and young adult literature
- Get involved in staff development and training.

The other parts of the assignment are confusing to me - usually we are all
specialists in everything; however, as a Head Librarian, I deal with
personnel and budget as well as technology planning. For challenges and
problems - it's usually money and managing budgets; since tuition dollars
typically make up most of our operating budgets and we are not directly
responsible for grading students, librarians have to continue to prove thei=
r
worth in school settings. Becoming the place all teachers and students
flock to for technology, reading and lesson planning advice ensures our
future. Being involved in all aspects of the school is another way.

I work for La Jolla Country Day School. From 2000 to 2003 I was the Upper
School Librarian. This fall I came back and am now the head librarian. We
have four full time librarians including me and a full time assistant. We
have 1000 students in grades PreK-12.

Do you have a good backup?
Not sure if swapping the drives will work. How were the drives =
configured? Was it a RAID? If so, hopefully it's an add on RAID card.=20

If you can integrate, do it. It's one less manual import/export you have to do a on a regular basis.

Make sure that your administrators are the ones who use and test the system. Schedule two test calls per year, so you continue to find the bad data (phone numbers) and anomalies -- such as a phone that goes to someone in Australia who is sleeping when
you test at 3 in the afternoon :) Plus, your community will be used to getting the phone calls.

favoring the National Geographic Society will allow magazine and newspaper=

publishers to transfer their published archives to computer discs and sell=
=20
them commercially without infringing on freelance contributors'=20
copyrights.

National Geographic won its dual victories after more than a decade of=20
litigation in two federal circuits. The publisher of National Geographic=20
has battled freelance writers and photographers over whether it must pay=20
them additional royalties associated with the sale of "The Complete=20
National Geographic" -- a digital version of the magazine's published=20
archive.

On Monday, Judge Rosemary Barkett, writing the majority opinion for a=20
sharply divided en banc court of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals=20
rejected the claims of a freelance Florida photographer whose work has=20
been published in National Geographic.

Barkett was joined in the majority by fellow circuit judges Joel F.=20
Dubina, Susan H. Black, Edward E. Carnes, Stanley Marcus, William H. Pryor=
=20
Jr. and Senior U.S. Circuit Judge Phyllis A. Kravitch. Judge Frank M. Hull=
=20
recused.

The ruling turned on the extent to which publishers may reprint and=20
distribute previously published photos without infringing on individual=20
photographers' copyrights. Central to that ruling is the definition of a=20
"collective work" to which a freelancer has contributed.

A publisher, according to the en banc majority, may reproduce a freelance=
=20
photographer's work in a reprint of the original collective work (such as=
=20
a magazine, newspaper or encyclopedia) to which that photographer=20
contributed; or a revision of that collective work; or a later collective=
=20
work "in the same series." Reproduction of copyrighted photos in a new=20
work without permission would constitute copyright infringement.

The ruling turns on what constitutes an acceptable revision and what=20
constitutes a new work in light of a 2001 landmark copyright ruling by the=
=20
U.S. Supreme Court. In that ruling, New York Times v. Tasini, the high=20
court determined reprinting freelance writers' articles without permission=
=20
in large computer databases such as Lexis-Nexis infringed freelancers'=20
copyrights.

This week, the 11th Circuit relied on the language of that ruling in=20
deciding that although photographs could not be reprinted in computer=20
databases without permission, they could be republished on CD-ROM or DVD=20
in a reprint of the original work, (in this case, issues of National=20
Geographic) without infringing freelance contributors' copyrights.

Additional request re: Looking for an inspiring online video about teaching

Tagging on to Jim's original message. I am hosting a week long workshop =
for some of my teachers called TIPS (Technology Integration: Practical =
Strategies). The goal for the week is to allow teachers the opportunity =
to play with and explore some of the "educational technology" tools that =
are out there (interactive white boards, document cameras/visual =
communicators, senteo, video cameras, digital cameras, blogs, wikis, web =
2.0, etc). Also, to allow the teachers to be students, learning the =
technology skills through modeling and experience rather than just =
sitting in the audience or just another "normal" in-service. And =
finally, to get them thinking about WHY use technology...is it the best =
method to teach the info...and to provide teachers with some readings to =
inform their choices regarding technology integration.

This is a model I have borrowed from another school, who borrowed from =
another, and so forth. I am trying to not reinvent the wheel, just =
adding some cogs, tweaking it to make it fresh.

That said, if you have any fantastic resources for teachers prek-6, =
inspiring videos, thought provoking quotes, etc. I would love to see =
them.

I am collecting the links on del.icio.us and would be happy to share any =
and all resources I gather.=20

advice re: emergency notification systems

Please forgive the cross-post...

We are implementing our first emergency notification system (automated
dialing/emailing to notify parents of school cancellations and
emergencies). If you are using such a system, I could use a little advice.

Just thinking about notification via phone calls for a moment (not emails
or text messages)...

I have used a 4g model for about a year - under the installed Linux and =
with Windows XP. The experience has been very positive. We plan on =
purchasing a set of 20 ultra mobile pc's this summer, probably EEEPC =
901's but I will seriously look at other competitors when they become =
available in July. They will serve a s a portable class set and =
hopefully generate the interest to push for these umpc's in a one-to-one =
setting soon. The ASUS has been reliable and durable. I have had some =
frustrations with wireless connectivity, I suppose this will be better =
in the newer models. =20

I think they would make a great solution for K and 1st. I think the 4G =
models would be just fine if you are ok with the 800 pixel wide screen.

I have owned one for about a year now for use as a family computer and
it has been a bit of a mixed bag:

Pros:
--Light weight - My 6 year old has no problems
--Durable - Survived several drops. The extra space around the screen
and flash drive help a lot.
--Swappable SD Card lets family members keep their own stuff accessible
without a memory stick hanging off the side.
--Fast boot time
--Solid software bundled. The software that comes with it is pretty
comprehensive.
--Smaller keyboard is great for smaller hands.

Cons:
--Wireless is not easy to set up and I have never gotten it to work
properly with WAP (WEP and open access only). There is a known issue
with DCHP leasing under WAP that has not been fixed. Even once it is on
a network it can be flakey.
--Battery life. I am lucky to get more than 1.5 hours of use on a
charge when using wireless.
--Heat. It gets a little warmer than my iBook on battery and can get
quite hot when plugged in.

I would recommend the 8GB or more of disk space. I have not attempted
installing additional software because I am already running out of room
on the 4GB model.

I understand some of these issue have been addressed in later
iterations. They are definitely worth a test drive.

Has anyone tried the Asus Eee PC? Is there enough open source / linux
stuff and online resources available for the K-1 market to make this
type of PC workable? Have you had any problems with the 7" screen when
accessing websites?

If you use other laptops in your K-1 classroom, please share your
successes.

Determining what to believe and what to take with a grain of salt is a
difficult part of any research process and this article adds some
constructive ideas towards the conduct of this thought process.

Subject: [MEDIEV-L:56198] So Called Historians at the Local Bookstore

It's easy to warn people off one particular book or author, but I think it
might be more valuable to discuss what historians look for in a book. As I've
become more experienced as a historian, I've read fewer and fewer bad books (in
terms of content, not necessarily style) because I've learned to what to look
for in them. Here's what I look for when I'm browsing in a bookstore or
library:

Documentation is usually the first thing I look at after the title (the form of
documentation doesn't bother me too much--as that's often dictated by
publishers or editors, who might prefer endnotes to footnotes or discourage
in-text references in favor of those annoying end-of-work notes that refer back
to page and a key phrase rather than risk scaring readers away with note
numbers--but the presence of some sort of documentation seems essential to a
good work of history). Primary sources (especially if the author is reading
them in the original language) are a good indication that the author has done
his/her own research, but might not be present in a work that aims to summarize
the "state of the question" by looking at a wide range of secondary sources.

Secondary sources should be academic sources (not wikipedia or a college
textbook or the New York Times, for example) and mainly up-to-date at the time
of writing (some sources from the 1800s might indicate thorough research, but
little or nothing from the 20 years or so prior to initial publication suggests
that the author is relying on half-remembered and poorly checked "facts" from a
long-distant college course). If a book is intended for a non-academic
audience, documentation might be minimal but there will probably be other clues
that the author has done his/her homework and really confronted issues (in the
acknowledgments, for example, or in a "further readings" section or even in
discussions of sources and arguments in the text).

Once I've flipped through the bibliography and notes, I'll start thumbing
through the text itself. I personally like to see some discussion of sources
and disputed evidence in the text, though some authors will relegate this
information to notes if it interferes too much with the narrative line. I also
like to see some attempt at understanding historical actors in terms of their
own society. It is valuable to step back and say how we (21st-century people)
would evaluate an action in moral/ethical terms, but that should be an aside
after actions have been looked at in terms of medieval values (or early modern
values in the case of Weir's works).

Red flags for me include haphazard documentation (no citations for pages and
then suddenly a footnote for a trivial fact that is of marginal importance,
especially if the source cited is a textbook or encyclopedia), constant
reference to the "feelings" or "thoughts" of the historical actors
(particularly if I know that the only evidence we have for them are chroniclers
or legal texts and not even diaries or personal letters--more so if there is no
qualifier such as "might have thought" or "must have felt"), and lots of
irrelevant description of physical setting and clothing (some is good to
understand what's going on or even just to give the reader a feeling of
immediacy, but lots of details that have no relationship to the topic at hand
always seem to me thrown in to mask the fact that the author doesn't have a
handle on the cultural context--or maybe the author is angling to have the work
turned into a costume drama).

There are also certain topics that will cause a book to get special scrutiny
from me: anything to do with women in the Tudor dynasty (either by birth or
marriage), the Templars, Stonehenge (or any other famous megalith--if I can
imagine Leonard Nimoy doing a special on it, then I consider myself lucky if
10% of the books on the shelf are of any value whatsoever)--you get the idea.
There are lots of very good books on these topics but there are even more very
bad books out there. I also shy away from books that try to sell me a sweeping
generalization, usually highly flattering to one ethnic group ("How the Irish
Saved Civilization" or "How the Scots Invented the Modern World:The True Story
of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World & Everything in It ")
or feeding into common stereotypes ("A World Lit Only by Fire").
