You might be interested in talking to Don Buckley, the tech director
at the School
at Columbia University <http://theschool.columbia.edu/>. They've built their
own social network for their school community using an open source platform
called Elgg. They also have their own Flickr-like and You Tube-like media
spaces. Kids are guided through making profiles and avatars for their social
network, and they even research famous historical figures and create
profiles and avatars for them. All entries are tagged with key descriptive
words. Because there is a tag cloud on the front page of this network,
people can click on a tag and see how various profiles are related and this
is especially interesting in light of the historical figures. They can see
how various famous mathematicians, for instance, were interested in the same
subjects or came from the same part of the world etc. I think they've
covered mathmaticians so far and are planning on expanding to literary
figures, politicians etc. I think this approach to teaching kids appropriate
behavior around social media in context is brilliant. This is a little
different than the PR view that I think you are looking for, but I think it
has implications for how we introduce social media to school communities!
