The lack of offline access was not an issue for most, but for those for whom
it was an issue it was a big one. I could see Google Gears coming so we
decided to proceed with the migration in September and we had some
workarounds for those who needed offline ability. I was very happy when
gears finally showed up for email.
Anyhow, I've been using gears since the first day it came out for email and
it works well. It's still technically "beta" but we've had no issues. The
only significant downside is you can't attach documents offline...or at
least not since I last checked. I should add the caveat that not many of our
users even have it enabled because they don't need offline access so we
really haven't pounded on it that much outside of our tests in the tech
department.
FWIW, I also use www.RememberTheMilk.com to manage my next actions lists
which uses gears for offline access and it works well too.
