Re: Anyone Using Gmail?

I believe you can use Postini's optional (and paid) email archiving service=
to provide such a thing. I seriously doubt Google "keeps email" forever, =
and even if they did as long as a retention policy is specified in their te=
rms of service, that's all they're legally obligated to provide. Of course=
, once served with a lawsuit it becomes the school's responsibility to begi=
n archiving all emails unless that requirement is waived by the court (at l=
east, that's how I understand it).

Also, I'd like to point out an often overlooked fact - backups are not cons=
idered archives. Backups are simply point-in-time snapshots of your email =
storage and do not cover items that were sent or received and then deleted =
within the timeframe of the backup. True archiving happens at the transpor=
t or gateway level and typically requires third-party software or an MX-bas=
ed service like PostINI or Microsoft's Hosted Archiving service.

(Oh, and IANAL).
