using just Docs right now, and have turned off Gmail and chat until we are
comfortable letting our kids have additional tools. So far, the kids and
teachers have caught on to use the collaborative features of Docs and it
seems to help with peer editing their written work.
That said, our IT people are looking for a solution that works better for us
than First Class and they are pushing Zimbra. I don't know much about
Zimbra, but I'd love feedback if anyone else is familiar with it.
Last week, I presented at the Celebration of Teaching and Learning
conference for Google as I'm writing a search curriculum for them, and I
spent some time chatting with the Google Apps people as well. They are
offering their email security tool, Postini, for free with anyone who signs
up for Google Apps for Education for the length of their contract, which is
usually four or five years. I believe this offer is good until June, but I
don't know many details on this. You can probably find more info here:
http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/index.html.
Secondly, I started a form and spreadsheet so that educators can find other
people who are using Google Apps... feel free to add your school here:
http://tinyurl.com/67vtuc or use these spreadsheet to locate a school to
contact about their use of Google Apps: http://tinyurl.com/5f8kkp.
