Washington, DC--NAIS, as part of its Global Initiatives, is pleased to
announce a Professional Development Certificate: Teaching Leadership for
Global Issues. The program will be delivered by Global Youth Leadership
Institute (GYLI) in collaboration with the World Learning SIT Graduate
Institute (SIT), formerly known as the School for International =
Training.
Both GYLI and SIT are known for excellence in global leadership =
development.

The start date is March 20, 2009. For enrollment information, please =
contact
Jesse Blom at (414) 238-2408 or jblom@gyli.org Participants in the =
one-year
program will earn a Certificate in Teaching Leadership for Global Issues
from GYLI and the SIT Graduate Institute ($250), and may also have the
option of earning graduate credit ($500). The new program comprises 82 =
hours
of instruction over a 10-month term, and is designed for working =
teachers.
Teachers will participate in a weekend training and a summer experience =
with
GYLI and a nine-month module in using inquiry to apply their learning. =
The
inquiry module, co-facilitated by staff from GYLI and SIT, will combine
limited face-to-face meetings with online work and conference calls.=20

Teaching Leadership for Global Issues has evolved from the overwhelming
enthusiasm of independent school faculty members involved with GYLI =
since
2002. They say the program helps develop their vision of community, as =
they
learn how to address complex issues such as religious pluralism,
inter-racial understanding, ecological sustainability, and inter-group
negotiations. Whether teachers have a passion for human rights, =
non-violent
conflict resolution, or caring for the earth, the new Certificate =
program
will help develop the confidence they need to lead initiatives in their
schools and communities.

"This will be a great opportunity for teachers to further develop their
leadership capacities,=94 said NAIS Director of Global Initiatives, Paul
Miller. =93Teachers who participate in the certificate program may well =
be
interested in going on to study for a master's degree at SIT. Our =
schools
and our world need great leadership, and true global education is only
sustainable if teachers are prepared to lead."

GYLI is known throughout the United States for bringing together diverse
groups of students and teachers in a 3-year-long curriculum. Intensive
summer residencies and follow-up activities back at sending schools =
merge
with the academic calendar. The organization also hosts teacher-training
workshops on collaborative leadership, religious pluralism, and
multicultural identity.

The SIT Graduate Institute prepares global citizens to address the =
world=92s
most critical challenges. Sharing GYLI=92s belief in experiential =
education,
where learning occurs at the nexus of theory and practice, the SIT =
Graduate
Institute offers masters degrees, certificates, and professional =
development
programs on its historic 250-acre campus in Vermont and in overseas =
field
sites. Founded over 40 years ago as a training center for early Peace =
Corps
volunteers, the Institute prepares students from more than 30 countries =
to
become informed and effective leaders, professionals, and global =
citizens.

Staff for the Certificate program are Maggie Cassidy, MAT, Graduate
Institute (formerly the School for International Training) and Jim =
Stuart, a
popular and inspiring specialist in online learning who holds an MBA =
from
Harvard University and serves on the board of Lake Forest Academy (IL)
