Re: Filemaker Pro Print Question

Is the report card layout such that you could duplicate the layout, delete
the first page, leaving only the comments, and then print the edited
report/layout?

NEH Teacher Institute

Please Post

The Role of Slavery in the Rise of New England Commerce, Industry, and
Culture to 1860
NEH Summer Institute for School Teachers July 19-31, 2009
Rhode Island Historical Society
This NEH Teacher Institute will be held at Brown University and is NEH "We
the People" initiative.

The role of slavery in the development of New England will be divided into
six topical areas, each of which will be the focus of one or two days'
sessions: a) the American/Rhode Island slave trade; b) provisioning the
West Indies; c) slavery in New England; d) gradual emancipation, racism,
and abolitionism; e) antebellum New England and the "Slave Power"; and f)
race and slavery in New England memory. The first three themes focus on
the colonial period, the fourth and fifth on the post-Revolutionary and
antebellum periods, and the last on the evolving memory of slavery and
antislavery, and their racial legacies, to the present.

Hmm...now that I think about it, OpenOffice.org supposedly has some of that
functionality, I just haven't had a chance to play around with it yet.

Re: Filemaker Pro Print Question

I don't know Filemaker Pro but...

Why not just print double-sided? You waste toner (bad) but not paper (good)
and NOT TIME (VERY GOOD)! Every other solution sounds like adding work to
your plate. Double-sided printing (in draft mode of course) gets it done
with just a few clicks.

As an easy work-around, why not create a layout for comment printing:

I am not sure if this can be done, but it would be great if it could.

I have a two-page report card layout for several grades. My teachers
like to get hard copies of the comments section (2nd page) as they still
feel more comfortable editing on paper and then changing on a computer.

Is there anyway that I can pull up all the students in a class and tell
it to print the second page of each record? Right now, I either print
everything and recycle the front pages, or I will just print page 2 or 2
of current record, omit this record and then repeat for every student.

Thanks,

Re: Drawing programs

Oh for a program that would provide the wonderfully integrated
functionality that AppleWorks provided 20 years ago. Sometimes I wonder
about progress.

Another idea for a drawing program is to start them in a 3D environment
early. Google SketchUp is free, available for Macs and Windows, is VERY
easy to learn, and has a huge support infrastructure, so if kids develop
an interest in 3D drawing there are lots of resources to nourish that
interest.

Re: Drawing programs

Ever since AppleWorks (and its drawing component) have officially gone away,
and the old versions of it started being problematic under OSX 10.5, we've
been starting to use EazyDraw for drawing (not painting, that's something
different). I say "starting to use" because I'm still getting the hang of it
myself.

As far as painting is concerned, we have Graphic Converter, which I suppose
you could use as a paint program, but which I've been using as the "poor
person's Photoshop."

Both programs are relatively inexpensive. We got a site license for EazyDraw
for about $250, and I think we paid about the same for Graphic Converter.
The difference is that I believe that we have a true site license for
EazyDraw, while with GC we have a license for 20 copies, which is the most I
ever expect to have running at the same time, and quite frankly, I haven't
even seen 14 running concurrently.

Re: Filemaker Pro Print Question

Renee,

Why not create a script that prints only page 2 and then prints one student
at a time via a loop.

Go to record 1
Loop
Print page 2 of current record
go to next record
exit if last
end loop

It isn't elegant, but I think it would work

If you find something better, I would love to hear of it.

Fwd: NEH - The American Lyceum workshop

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing on behalf of The National Endowment for the Humanities
Landmarks in American History and Culture to announce a workshop for
community college faculty. The workshop is titled The American Lyceum: The
Oratory of Idealism, Opportunity, and Abolition. The following is a brief
description.

There was a time when America was an "oratorical culture," a nation defined
by the guest speakers who graced the stages of America's public speaking
lecture circuits. At this Workshop, we return to one of the most successful
of these circuits, The American Lyceum. We visit Lyceum sites, hear some of
the great orations presented at them, and discuss the way in which key
issues of the day were addressed at Lyceum programs, especially "Idealism"
and "Abolition." The workshop will feature prominent historians,
rhetoricians, and professional interpreters. It promises to be an
unforgettable experience.

DATES: May 17-23, 2009 or May 24-30, 2009
HOME LOCATION: Northeastern University, Boston, MA
HISTORIC SITES: Concord, MA; Millbury, MA; Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA;
Salem, MA
STIPEND: $750 plus available funding for travel
WORKSHOP WEBSITE: www.americanlyceum.neu.edu
NEH WEBSITE: www.neh.gov/projects/landmarkscollege.html

Applications must be postmarked by March 16, 2009. I invite you to visit

Re: moodle questions - authentication cached when LDAP /AD down?

Steven:

As I understand it, a Moodle ASP can cache your login info as a secondary
reference while your LDAP/AD authentication is down. Of courses, any changes
made after you come back up need to be refreshed. Check with a provider on
this.

We also host our own Moodle server in house as a VM in our ESX cluster.
Usage is very light, and resource utilization stats on the VM bears that
out. However, based on my calculations, this VM can scale quite
effectively. To keep load reasonable, we use Lighttpd instead of Apache,
PHP running in Fast-CGI mode, and a PHP caching engine. Moodle 1.9 brought
along many, many code improvements as well, bringing overall script
execution time down.

My biggest concern with continuing to keep Moodle in-house is our power
situation. Key is in an older, residential community that frequently looses
power during major storms. Our battery backup system only runs us for an
additional 20 minutes before shutting systems down, so in the event of an
extended power outage that would shut down the school, our Moodle site would
also be shut down. I'm considering moving Moodle off-site to a hosted VM,
but I want to maintain LDAP authentication against AD for our logins. Of
course, if our power is out on campus our AD is down, so even though Moodle
is off-site no one could log in. So now I'm looking at two VMs, one for
Moodle and one for a read-only domain controller.

Anyway, the point of this post is that planning is everything, and uptime is
more than just about having your Moodle server up. If it depends on LDAP
authentication, your internal mail server for communication, etc, you need
to take those things into account.

Re: Thoughts on Xirrus?

I agree with you Brian.

We have turned into a huge supporter of Xirrus after switching over to
them last year. We did the free live site survey and were amazed at the
improvement. The service is incredible and they provide a full 5 year
warrantee on HW. We have had a 1:1 program for 10 years and we now use
75% fewer switch ports (I counted) with much greater distance, coverage
and throughput.=20

A separate controller is not necessary to run the arrays because the
controller and switch are built into each array. The single point of
failure issue is a good point but we were running a wireless system
managed by a single controller which was also a single point of
failure..it may not be if you have multiple controllers. Bottom
line...our teachers are using tons of video, DyKnow and web 2.0 programs
without having the signal droppage that we have had to deal with in past
years. Also, even though they are new, I think they have only been in
business for 5 years, many well respected institutions are switching
over to them. I am certainly not a wireless expert but we have been
extremely happy with our choice.

Good luck,
Connie

I am reading all of the posts about the on going battle of what wireless
solution is better and why. Price seems to be the big issue of choosing
an industrial grade wireless solution. When companies come to you and
preform the site survey is the survey free and guaranteed? Meaning if
additional APs are required the company gives them to you. When a
vendor
gives you a price is that it? Take it for face value? =20
Xirrus cut my number of AP's in half and that included a new building.=20
They came to me with a huge price and I sent it back for a do over. The
site survey was guaranteed. If a problem comes up someone is on the
phone
with me and/or standing in my doorway ready to work. I may have paid a
little more for my solution but it was well worth it.=20
