Re: Open Office

re: Neo Office / Open Office doesn't do what I need...

Just curious to hear of specifics.

On a related note, I'm also curious to hear about what Adobe Photoshop does that GIMP cannot.

Re: Open Office

I personally have been using Open Office for the past year and a half within a MS Office environment without any problems at all.

An interesting case study is the Bainbridge Island (Washington) school district where they decided to go to Open Office and took the monies that normally went to Microsoft Office and applied them to professional development. From the reports I heard at the recent NECC in San Antonio, the experience has turned out quite well.

On a different but related note, I find it interesting that this is all happening in Microsoft's "backyard"...

Re: Open Office

We've been using Open Office for about three years now. The big
downsides are that multimedia doesn't work as well in Impress as it does
in Powerpoint, but that looks a lot better this summer. I'm hoping to
see a significant improvement.

I would STONGLY recommend setting the default save formats as the Office
2003 formats. Also, get the plugins to save to the Microsoft OOXML
(Office 2007) formats. The transition to and from OOXML is not as
smooth as it should be and MS is re-writing the whole format to deal
with this. Thus, I would still default to the MS 2003 formats.

Lastly, Open Office (as opposed to Star Office) does not include clip
art. However, you can go get open clip art and then install it. They
you build the galleries and it's done. If you are interested, I have
one of our students build us a clip art gallery. Its open clip art, so
I'd be happy to share it.

Take care,

Re: Open Office

Over the last four years, schools in the state of Indiana have moved
over to OpenOffice - as well as free and open source operating systems
and free and open source applications - and have saved 50% to 75% on the
total cost of ownership per PC. I have spoken with many of the teachers
and administrators and they have been very happy. Especially because
they can get a PC for every student with the money they've been saving.

That's pretty much my feeling too. I've been trying out NeoOffice (one of
the Mac ports of the OpenOffice idea), and my impression has been that while
it's free, free is not always the better price. It's slow, it's harder to
use, and it doesn't do a lot of the things that at least *I* want a WP
program to do.

Say what you will about Microsoft and its pricing policies (which have
gotten a lot better over the past 20 years), but there's a reason that Word
is number one: It's just *better*. I've used everything from XyWrite to Word
Perfect to MacWrite to WriteNow to AppleWorks, and lots of other stuff in
between; and Word is the best for what most people will need to be able to
do. Plus, it's a cross-platform program. That's very important to me.

I will say, however, that NeoOffice is very good at opening up documents
from some other formats that kids may have at home so I can save them as
Word documents they can work on at school.

Re: Open Office

We've gone to OO for students and teaching faculty, but have retained MSO
for administration, which, in our case, is about 4 people.
: )

Students seem to have adopted it without a blink. Staff have had some
issues, and the difference, I think, is that staff demand more of their word
processing in terms of formatting and general style. Overall though, the
ransition bumps have been small and far between. We've retained MSO for
admin for two simple reasons: re-training the staff isn't worth what it
costs for so few copies and secondly, MSO is just an easier program to use,
IMHO, for turning out good looking documents.

If however, the scale of our organization were different, I would likely
come to a different conclusion.

Last note: something to keep an eye on is Adobe Acrobat. They have a
document sharing system that, while in its early stages, looks promising.
Word processing is done through Buzzword, which is easy to use and very
attractive. No spreadsheets or presentations as of yet, so in that sense
they're pretty far behind Google Docs: on the other hand, GDocs just
released a bunch of templates, which may help in moving away from the bland
kind of WP they've offered in the past.

To be honest, my biggest problem right now is picking one and *sticking to
it!*

Curriculum Mapper vs. Atlas

Dear Colleagues,

A summer work group at my school is researching various curriculum mapping
options. It looks as if Curriculum Mapper and Atlas are the frontrunners. In
recent postings to this list, I observed that many of you are using Atlas at
your schools. I am interested in learning why your schools chose Atlas over
Curriculum Mapper, or vice versa if you are a Curriculum Mapper user. Any
insights you can offer would be appreciated.

Re: verbage for Faculty Handbook

Our issue this year was not that current faculty posted inappropriate
photos, etc but rather-- our younger faculty still had posts/photos from
college that may have been perceived by some as unprofessional.

Hi Lorri,

You ask a loaded question, but I will begin with a simple answer. We =
have
nothing specific in our Faculty Handbook under Professional Standards =
that
refers to social networking sites. However, it would be hard to uphold =
the
standards, and then practice unprofessional behavior on a social =
networking
site. Your question, between the lines, implies that there is a concern =
at
Hamden Hall that has prompted an administrative response that might be
codified. IMHO, I would advise against such a practice.

I have used social networking for thirty-two years (fifteen prior to =
being
in education) as a means of giving and receiving information from people =
I
trust. Most of these years, I lacked the power of the internet to make =
the
process easier. Still, I attribute my professional relationships, both =
close
and casual, established over the years, as most important to any
professional success I have experienced. In cyberspace, I belong to at =
least
ten social networking sites with varying levels of participation, but =
all
are important at certain moments. If these sites didn=B9t exist, I would =
spend
more time on the phone or writing letters, but I wouldn=B9t abandon the =
notion
that people, at their best, are collegial and help other people. For =
that
reason, I would be very circumspect about defining adult usage of social
networking sites where you could potentially inhibit collegiality and
professional development. Our professional standards are very clear =
about
the nature of faculty relationships with students; it is a more than

well.

Re: verbage for Faculty Handbook

Lorri,

We've been adding information on social networking to our AUP.

We have almost approved this statement:

I will maintain common, face-to-face social conventions and boundaries to a=
void circumstances which are or could be perceived as inappropriate while u=
sing social networking, blogs, or any other interactive websites.

I have linked to a number of resources at my blog here:

http://www.learning-blog.org/2008/05/29/your-aup-on-social-networking/

Good luck!

- Alex

Hi All-
Does anyone have any verbage they could share from their Faculty Handbook
concerning social networking sites? We are thinking of adding something

Re: verbage for Faculty Handbook

Hi Lorri,

You ask a loaded question, but I will begin with a simple answer. We have
nothing specific in our Faculty Handbook under Professional Standards that
refers to social networking sites. However, it would be hard to uphold the
standards, and then practice unprofessional behavior on a social networking
site. Your question, between the lines, implies that there is a concern at
Hamden Hall that has prompted an administrative response that might be
codified. IMHO, I would advise against such a practice.

I have used social networking for thirty-two years (fifteen prior to being
in education) as a means of giving and receiving information from people I
trust. Most of these years, I lacked the power of the internet to make the
process easier. Still, I attribute my professional relationships, both clos=
e
and casual, established over the years, as most important to any
professional success I have experienced. In cyberspace, I belong to at leas=
t
ten social networking sites with varying levels of participation, but all
are important at certain moments. If these sites didn=B9t exist, I would spen=
d
more time on the phone or writing letters, but I wouldn=B9t abandon the notio=

that people, at their best, are collegial and help other people. For that
reason, I would be very circumspect about defining adult usage of social
networking sites where you could potentially inhibit collegiality and
professional development. Our professional standards are very clear about
the nature of faculty relationships with students; it is a more than
