I agree with Renee. We begin touch typing instruction at the end of 3rd gra=
de, and give a two week refresher course the the beginning of 4th, 5th, and=
6th grades.

We have Type to Learn 4 network edition on campus. Students really prefer t=
he free online practice/games to TTL4, but it is always a "choice time" opt=
ion.

I would actually worry about using touch typing with students in K-2.
Even in 3rd grade there are some students that just don't have the small
motor skills to learn touch typing. We use TTL4 as an introduction in
3rd grade, with the 4th and 5th grade teachers using it a lot more.

The program I know that has been designed with a lot of science behind
for the younger students is Talking Fingers. It was purchased by
Learning Company awhile back and they renamed it Read, Write, Type. It
now seems to be back at the Talking Fingers company along with a couple

For k-2, we have used Sunburst New Keys for Kids software.
Dance Mat typing is an online game from BBC Kids that students enjoy.

I think the only way to monitor is to use an email system that is set up =
for that like Gaggle.net. Certain words are tagged (and you can add =
your own), and email is sent to the teacher rather than the student if =
it gets tagged. You can also go in and see all emails sent and =
received.

However in saying that, we used to use Gaggle and switched to Google. =
We really felt bullying was not a technology issue but a behavioral one. =
We have middle school advisory twice a week, and students will share if =
there are issues going on. =20

We supervise their use of technology at school, and we encourage parents =
to supervise their technology use at home. We respond to issues brought =
to our attention just like any other behavior issue. Whether it happens =
at the lockers, in email, while chatting, in the classroom, in the gym, =
it is inappropriate behavior. =20

The biggest issue we have had is when the behavior happens. If students =
are at the shopping mall after school bullying another student, we =
generally don't have to deal with it. But if they are home using email =
after school, somehow this ends up being a school issue. Again, we are =
really trying to focus on the behavior and not the technology.=20

Bo,

I believe your school has the right to monitor email as long as you define =
the policy in your AUP. You are walking into minefield as it pertains to p=
rivacy, legality, ethics and trust issues. I recommend looking at other m=
ethods of dealing with cyber-bullying before scanning student email for key=
words or phrases. =20

If you move forward with monitoring I suggest you take a look at your firew=
all solution and see if the manufacture has the ability to log and analyze =
communications traffic. (email, blog, chat)

I agree with the recommendations of Renee Ramig (onsite tech, Professional =
Development, reliable network and board/admin support). You have an ambiti=
ous agenda to re-wire and re-engineer the school's IT assets. =20

There are several thin client solutions (robust server with cheaper client =
workstations) that might fit your needs. The two I'm most familiar with ar=
e nComputing and Linux-based solutions. I've included a few links to resou=
rces on both of these. I was first introduced to the power of linux in sch=
ool settings by Steve Haragon (his blog is linked to as well). The benefit=
of Linux as a thin client is that older machines (possibly donated) can be=
used and will run quite well as long as the server is robust enough. At o=
ur school we've deployed some nComputing clients and the results are mixed =
(I'm not a big fan, but the potential use is intriguing).

We also use XEN for fault tolerance but in a different way right now.
Our First Class email server runs on a dedicated bladeserver, but we also
have a virtualized clone of it running under XEN on an identical "backup"
bladeserver pool. Robocopy synchronizes the email network store daily
and in the event of a server failure, we simply change the IP address of
the virtual server to that of the failed server, start FCS and the virtual
server takes over until we repair/replace/restore the primary server.

The downside is that new FC updates have to be installed on both the hard
and virtual servers, since the scheduled daily routine only syncs FC data.

We still have a few high utilization servers running on dedicated
hardware, each with its own virtual backup, but one day soon, we will
probably run everything from virtualized server pools.

In the last few years I have learned that virtualized server pools are to
dedicated servers what RAIDs are to hard drives.

Re: Full server backup/image

We are using the high availability and disaster recovery products from Quor=
umLabs (www.quorumlabs.com). With the HA device we have file level and ful=
l server backups of each of our Windows servers. Additionally, after each =
backup an image of the server is automatically built (using XenServer) and =
available to be turned on with a few clicks. So in the event that we have =
a failure, we can have that server running again in a matter of minutes (th=
e data is from the last backup). We also have the data replicated off site=
to the DR appliance so that in the event of a real disaster, we can have o=
ur most critical servers running.

All that being said, all of our servers are virtual (vmware) so we are most=
ly protecting against loss of data, data corruption, and disaster. We do n=
ot have one hardware single point of failure.

Windows Server 2008 has image-based backups as the preferred method for bac=
king up a server. This works well, even if running a disk intensive databa=
se like Exchange. I unfortunately had to restore from an image-based backu=
p of mu Exchange Server and it worked exactly as it should. =20

Also, RAID can protect in the case of a hard drive failure. However, RAID =
does not suffice when the RAID controller dies - as was described. Nor doe=
s RAID help is the software and data of your server become corrupted. If t=
he problem is with the software and data RAID just makes multiple copies of=
the same problem. RAID is a must, but methods to back up the system and d=
ata should also be accounted for.

I am not an expert, but isn't that what RAID is for? It creates an ongoing=
mirror of the server, so if one crashes, you just switch over?
I have never had to use it, but that is my understanding.

After having my email server crash last week, I realized that just backing =
up data isn't enough - I really need to have a back up of the actual machin=
e with all the settings, configurations, etc. More like an image of the ha=
rd drive(s) so that it could be recreated should it be needed. Anyone do t=
his? Have suggestions for software/appliances/services? BTW, we currently=
back up data using a Barracuda appliance, but I haven't contacted them dir=
ectly yet to inquire about full server backup capabilities.

Outlook Public Folders

I am using Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003 on the clients. I created
public folders this year for different groups. There is an All Faculty
and Staff one, a Document one, a Middle School one, etc.

Three times now, someone has sent an email (and of course all three were
personal in nature), and they ended up in one of the public folders.
Twice it ended up in All Fac Staff and once in Documents. Both these
folders have permission for everyone to use.

When I looked at the messages, they were addressed only to the people
they were supposed to have gone to, not to the Documents or AllFacStaff
folder. The one today was actually sent by someone that did not even
have Documents up in her favorites area (thinking they accidentally
clicked on it) but it somehow ended up in Documents.=20

Bernadette:

Glad to see that you managed to get your Exchange server back up and
running. Given that you had a number of failures on the physical server, it
is a rather good time to think about more robust backup solutions.

It is certainly possible to recover a server using something like Symantec
Backup Exec or Barracuda's backup device (just to name a few) but this can
be a rather trying experience in many cases, especially in more complex
systems like Exchange.

But to get to more to your specific point, you may want to consider a
so-called "bare metal" backup solution. The idea behind this solution is
that you are creating an actual "image" of the server. If done correctly
(with the right tools), a bare metal backup can be restored to existing
hardware OR to NEW hardware. This is an important distinction because it
can greatly short-cut the recovery time especially when you have had a
fundamental server failure and you have to replace the entire hardware.
Otherwise, you have to go through building the server, recovering the
system state, re-installing applications and then recovering the actual
data.

Various manufacturers (including Acronis, Symantec and others) offer
bare-metal backup options. But regardless of what option you use, be sure
to REGULARLY test these images. Your backup is only as good as the last
restore you have done.

It does beg the question as to whether or not you should consider pushing
email (as well as other mission critical applications) out of house. If
your email was out at Google, Microsoft or any number of other vendors, this
would never have happened. Managing all of the various aspects of the day
to day IT environment is hard enough but actually building, maintaining and
testing disaster recovery models can be far more costly than using software
as a service models.

I thought that this is an issue only if you put the emails in the To: or CC:
field. Here all the email addresses are associated with the email - so it
shows as the email being part of a 'bulk' (read SPAM) email.

If you put them in the BCC: field. Then only the recipients email address is
associated with the email they receive - so it looks like a 1 to 1 email...

We use Cymphonix. EVERY device on my network that accesses the internet
falls into the default group which I set up as the student group (most
conservative filtering). Since I don't use AD on the 15% of the Macs we
have, when they get on the network, they are in the default group.

You can create as many groups as you want and move people by IP, by Mac
address, by AD name / group, etc. Each group (or even individual) can
have their own settings which can be as liberal as fully bypassing the
filter or as strict as blocking all access to the internet.

The only issue I had was the board members use our guest wireless
account for their personal computers which means they fall in the
default group. Now, I actually have very limited filtering on even in
this student group, but I do block Facebook because I have been asked by
the head to do this. So, a couple board members wanted access to
Facebook. I said they are welcome to use a school laptop. I created a
board login they use on the school laptop which is in a group that has
Facebook access.

Backup Exec has a virtual server agent as an add on that can restore a
virtual server very quickly. Regular Backup Exec can back up everything
on a server including system files, etc. The last time I checked
Barracuda did not have this option.

Sorry, should have been clearer. Already a RAID 1 with 2 HDDs.
Controller and motherboard both crashed and 1 HDD was corrupt. Managed
to make image of other HDD and used that to restore server capabilities
- obviously a disaster recovery situation so I want to be prepared in
the future just in case.

If your email system is not already on a RAID array, you should consider
this option. You didn't specify the reason for the failure, but if it
was
due to hard drie failure, and RAID would mitigate that problem. You can
also
simply mirror the boot drive with a separate drive. Finally, keeping the
data on drives other than the one running the OS and mail program can
help
you get back up and rolling faster.

Acronis does a good job of imaging file servers.
I do not recommend their SQL or Exchange products.
The universal restore only works if you restore to same manufacture process=
or (intel-to-intel/amd-to-amd).

You can also virtualize with VMWare ESXi (free) then convert the physical m=
achine to a virtual host as a backup.

If your email system is not already on a RAID array, you should consider
this option. You didn't specify the reason for the failure, but if it was
due to hard drie failure, and RAID would mitigate that problem. You can also
simply mirror the boot drive with a separate drive. Finally, keeping the
data on drives other than the one running the OS and mail program can help
you get back up and rolling faster.

Are you referring to a Windows or a Mac server?

I do a complete backup of my Mac server using Carbon Copy Cloner. I copy the entire HD to an external HD then I boot to the external HD just to make sure it functions. If the server HD dies or gets corrupted (which has happened in the past) I can just
plug in the external drive and at least function from my last backup. The only bad thing is that all services need to stop during the backup.

I'm not sure what you could use for a Windows server and I wonder if it gets more complicated depending on your RAID level.

We are using Websense Websecurity Filtering. I liked this option best as
there was no additional point of failures as adding in another appliance.
It is all software based and blocked based on "categores" and "protocols"
and has been working great for us.

We currently have 2 implementations, 1 is backup to tape using Symantec
Backup Exec and 2. is backing up online with Technology Partners Company.
Both scenarios capture system state and registry.

Here is what we use for security.

Filtering:
Spam - Barracuda Networks
Content - Marshal 8e6
IDS - DeepNines
Application Control - Impulse Safeware (NAC)
General Firewall - Fortinet

This combination of products works well. =20
I can regulate client bandwidth and connectivity based on the services I al=
low.

Example:
We generally have about 550 concurrent users (with chat and Facebook blocke=
d)
If I allow chat the number rises to about 650 concurrent users.
If I allow Facebook the number skyrockets to about 800.
(the teachers still have not found a use for Facebook during class so it re=
mains blocked)

We use the DeepNines box as an IDS, Filter and throttle bandwidth.
Our students are set at 200kbs, while faculty get 1mb .

If you're looking for a single good multi-function "filter", I recommend De=
epNines.

People to People Student Leadership summits

I was wondering if any one on this list had students that have attended
any of the leadership summits offered by People to People organization,
www.peopletopeople.com. I have nominated a student to attend the 2011
Technology leadership summit but before she goes through the process of
applying, I wanted to try to get feedback about their program and if it
