Scheduling software that fits specific criteria for elementary school use

Hello all and happy holidays!

I know there have been some posts of late about block scheduling - a
colleague of mine here at CEE (Toddler-Grade 6) is looking at block
scheduling software. She asked me to post the following question to the
group:
"I know such a thing as a block scheduling assistant exists, but I
cannot seem to locate anything that is appropriate for elementary school
block scheduling and is not super expensive or packaged with 8000 other
things."
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Interactive Whiteboard - VBoard brand

Hello to all,

The school that I began working in last year has SmartBoards and 2 VBoards.
I am not familiar with VBoards, but one of them will not work interactively.
I tried finding a support location for this product, but there was nothing
on the internet. The only information I had was the name of the company that
we initially leased these boards, and eventually owned them. I did contact
the sales company to get a set of drivers, but the computer still will not
recognize that it is attached to the VBoard.

Does anyone have experience with VBoards and can direct me to a good support
company?

Thanks,

Re: AV preferences

Just want to throw my support behind Sophos. We switched from McAfee to
Sophos 3 years ago (and we have just renewed for 3 more years). The price
is right, their support is great, and it works great cross-platform.

Hi Everyone,

If you are using iPads this year or are planning on using iPads in the =

AV preferences

Dan,

Several years ago we moved from Symantec Enterprise AV to Sophos along
with several other schools in the Boston area. (I know from other forums
and groups.) We've been very pleased with Sophos. A couple of the major
comparative decision points were: the footprint, cost for school machines
that allowed us to give to students for free, a secondary cloud server for
mobile users, a comprehensive management tool. It seems there may be
several other good options now.

Re: use of computers on exams

Why should not students have the full resources of the 1:1 initiative
available to them on the intitiative? Why bother with 1:1 computing if you
are not got going to use the resource on assessments? Nothing changes if the
assessments are still geared to pencil and paper. Those assessments were
developed when there were no computers and the power of Google was not there
for students on question of fact. That power gives them the power of
argument and allows real thinking. Unleash them.

Re: AV preferences

We switched this summer to a managed host intrusion prevention service (MHI=
PS) from a company called the DigiTrust Group (www.digitrustgroup.com). Th=
ey handle all aspects of host security, from installation to remediation an=
d actively monitor and report on all hosts. It is obviously more expensive=
than just AV licensing, but the service that comes with it has freed up a =
significant amount of my staff time. We now have more than just installed =
software, we have someone actively looking at logs to make sure nothing is =
being missed.

Another school who changed from Symantec to TrendMicro. As a newbie, I
find TM to be pretty easy to navigate and administer. The pricing was
really good in comparison to ESET, AVG and Vipre. I checked a few
others too.

Before presenting this to my Head of School as a straight-forward
financial cost, I was curious if the ISED community had a preference
between these products: ESET, Vipre and AVG (business, not the free
one). Specifically, I was wondering if anybody has real life experience
with a product or company. Is the software 'light-weight' in terms of
load on the system? Is the central control interface useful and
informative? Was the software balky and troublesome to install or
maintain? I will need to uninstall Symantec Corporate Edition 10 from
the client computers, so if anybody has relevant tips on that...

Re: Bulk Email

Make your school a Google Education School. Give every student a Google Apps
Accounts and email account in your own domain. Give every family a google
account also in your domain. Then you share everything you need to throuhg
Google apps and email does not even enter the picture.
You could email it within your own domain also if you wished. Still not
spam!

AND DID I MENTION THAT IT IS ALL FREE!!!!

Retweeted it (@jonmergy), but wanted to send to ISED as well. Love this
sentence in the article relating to the topic of video but I feel can reall=

useful for all tech in classroom environments.

Properly used, video can transform learning, but it=B9s a tool, a piece of
technology that has to be harnessed to specific learning objectives.

AV preferences

I have received quotes for anti-virus solutions from several vendors. Befo=
re presenting this to my Head of School as a straight-forward financial cos=
t, I was curious if the ISED community had a preference between these produ=
cts: ESET, Vipre and AVG (business, not the free one). Specifically, I wa=
s wondering if anybody has real life experience with a product or company. =
Is the software 'light-weight' in terms of load on the system? Is the cen=
tral control interface useful and informative? Was the software balky and =
troublesome to install or maintain? I will need to uninstall Symantec Corp=
orate Edition 10 from the client computers, so if anybody has relevant tips=
on that...

Thank you. Please feel free to reply off-list.

By far the best app I have seen for Kindergarten is abc PocketPhonics

Students use their finger to trace the letters. You can choose

Re: Bulk Email

Heh. One person's spam is another person's lunch meat...

Seriously, there is a time and place for appropriate group e-mail to
audiences that want to be informed via those channels. That being said,
there should also be a way to opt out if someone chooses to do so.

Re: leveled books and the iPad and other apps

Here are a few leveled reader suggestions...definitely waiting for more cho=
ices in this category:

1. I've been enjoying the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) a=
pp on the iPad with my own second graders. You can search for public domain=
books by age, language and theme. Here's the link: http://itunes.apple.com=
/us/app/icdl-for-ipad-free-books-for/id363731638?mt=3D8

2. The iReading HD books are also pretty good:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id368404482?mt=3D8

3. And So Ouat has a few fairy tale titles that are really great as well, a=
nd can be read in English or French, in print or cursive:
http://www.so-ouat.com/en/the-three-little-pigs.html

We're definitely looking for more suggestions too!

Very interesting interview with venture capitalist Fred Wilson

Lots of good stuff in this interview about technology and the future.

http://www.paleycenter.org/mc-fred-wilson-roundtable-breakfast

At the end there is an interesting little riff about bringing
traditional content providers together with the tech entrepreneurs.
The speaker was wearing jeans in a room full of suits.

Question for Pat Bassett related to this. Did NAIS move forward on
getting the school equivalent of a Fred Wilson on to the NAIS board?

Bulk email is a necessity when attempting to reach all your students,

Re: Online book discussion?

Thanks to Sarah H., ISEnet has a book discussions category:
http://isenet.ning.com/forum/categories/book-discussions/listForCategory
short URL for link above: http://goo.gl/azJSd

I like how this area of ISEnet allows book discussions to persist over
time, so someone who reads one of these books a year from now might
stumble onto one of these conversations, post a comment, and
re-trigger previous participants thinking on the book.

It might also be interesting and useful if a school assigns a book as
summer reading for their faculty, to then use this area of ISEnet to
have the faculty discuss that book.

We do ask people to use the search function for their book title
before starting a new discussion thread so that we keep each book
under one thread, but assuming there is not a thread for a book you
have read, please-anyone, feel free to start a new discussion for that
book! Be sure to "categorize" it as a book discussion.

joy to the world,

Re: Technology Integration in K-5

Hi there---
I would love to talk to you about what we are doing at The Pingry School,
lower campus, in Short Hills, NJ.
In addition to tech being fully integrated into the curriculum at each grad=
e
level, K-5,
we have started an iPad pilot program in grades K and Grade 2.
With this program we have focused on differentiated learning and
collaboration.
There are 2 Kindergartens and we have 1 iPad shared with 2 students.
We have 2 Second grades and again 1 iPad shared with 2 students.
We are thrilled with our results!!!
Please come visit (we are 15 minutes from Newark airport) or give me a call
at 973-379-4550 x1438.

Hope to talk to you soon! Susan Ferris Rights
