Re: Mac alternative for TI-Interactive

Hi, Carl. We need a PC alternative for TI-Interactive as well <grin>, as TI
is no longer keeping TI-Interactive up-to-date. We're running the current
version, we think, which is v1.3 and is dated "Build 2004".

Maple has similar capabilities, as does Mathematica. We use Maple daily in
our advanced calculus class. However, this is a big hammer for a small job
in replacing Interactive, and is much more complex to use, with some
picayune syntax requirements.

Love to know of a current generation, well-supported, TI-Interactive-like
application.

Re: Admissions tracking software

Hi Dana -

We're using inRESONANCE's Portal Web Services, with their FM Pro-based
Portal on the SIS back-end. It has worked very well for us. I am not sure
how it would integrate with your existing SIS.

I agree with Norman's suggestion, a simple announcement. Your decision may
not be nearly as controversial among the parents than it was among your
faculty and staff.

Re: List servs for school communications

We are a Google Apps School. Google Groups are wonderful for this sort of
thing. They are just like old list serves in many ways and I believe would
work well for your puposes.

You might try a twitter account. Nannies and such could follow the tweets.
FaceBook would work very well also.

Creating a text list and texting everyone is another solution.

Re: Glogster

It often happens in PPT also when you narrate a presentation. It is very
had to be patient at the end of a presentation recording. Remind the student
that when they are finished talking just count to five slowly before you
click off the recording. It may clear up your problem.

Admissions tracking software

What do other schools use to track admission inquiries and applications? We
use a variety of manual procedures, but we're starting to look for a
web-based solution. We just need to track the admissions process, from
initial inquiry to acceptance. From there, we would enroll them into our
SIS.

Thanks!

Free range data

Colleagues,

Our admin team has met today and decided to "allow" students to do what
they've been doing all along anyway--access the web via their smartphones on
campus. This decision has involved many conversations and meetings (oh, how
I love the meetings!) with our various constituent groups--parents,
students, faculty, admins.

So--I'm not going to rehash the debate. What I'm focused on right now is
how to communicate this decision to parent community at large.

Has anyone else made a similar decision? Would you be willing to share your
letters with me? Any advice. . .?

Thank you,

Sarah

Re: List servs for school communications

What mailing list software are you currently using? Albeit also old, I use Majordomo for the mailing lists that I currently manage and the way I get around spam is to set the posting rules to only allow subscribers and nobody else. If the spam is actually coming from a subscriber, you can then eliminate that address easily.

I'd still recommend Majordomo but if starting from scratch, I'd seriously take a look at a modern mailing list server program, Mailman.

Majordomo is free, includes source code (Perl) but I believe is not Open Source.

Mailman is free and Open Source written in Python.

There's a whole universe of mailing list software that costs $$$ but I've never found the need to venture in that direction.

Re: Google Adwords

For 3 years I funded $50/month with two different adds and heavily targeted key words. We saw the best results when we had a dedicated landing page to click through from the add. When we dumped them on to the home page they didn't stay long. Enrollment improved over the last two years so I suspended it this year but we keep it paused and will reactivate it if we don't make enrollment goals by early 2011.

One other thing I notice in the analytics: For most of the first year and for the first month or two of the school year each year there after, it appeared a lot of parents clicked on the ad after searching for the school name. I would not recommend including the school name in your keywords or you will be paying a lot for parents who use Google in lieu of bookmarks or typing in the URL.

Re: state of the art digital arts labs

Patt -

I agree that the first choice is overkill. That said, the obvious advantage
of any tower is expandability. You could, for example, load it up with
additional hard drives and turn them into a RAID array, or simply use an
additional drive as a Time Machine backup for the primary drive and keep all
of the work local to the machine. No server required for backup.

We went with option #2, though with a smaller screen since we literally
could not fit the larger models in the small space the arts lab is in. You
could consider formatting the 2TB drive into two or more partitions. One
partition for the OS and applications, and a second for data. This makes it
easier to reimage if necessary. You could also use a partition as a time
machine backup, but this has some risk if the hard drive itself physically
fails. I do this with my laptop, but then I backup the time machine
partition to the cloud via Crash Plan.

I have found the performance of these computers to be excellent for
Photoshop, Final Cut Express, GarageBand, and similar CPU intensive
operations. On a final note, while we have not done this, there should be
ways to turn these machines into rendering farms for extremely large video
projects to render overnight, thereby gaining productive use of them during
otherwise idle times.

s

We have used www.canyoncreeksoftware.com for three years, and it has

time we compared prices, it was much less expensive than pickatime. It
is more basic, but works well. =20

Re: ised-l Parent Conference Scheduling Software

John - We use use a system called PTC Wizard, http://www.ptcwizard.com/. Our
scheduler is reasonably happy with the software. Parent compliance (there's
always someone!) is the bigger issue.

I have bookmarked several systems here: http://goo.gl/KDQHA

I would say we're still looking for the ideal system that accommodates
parents with two or more children in school, optimizes the time for parent's
while on campus, and handles schedules for teachers who have classes both in
middle school (where do conferences) and upper school (where we don't) and
handles team-taught courses.

This was my post from a different listserv:

We used http://www.schoolbookings.net/home this fall and it worked for both=
our high school and elementary school within a 3 day time frame without a =
glitch. Both division had different schedules and faculty options. The fee=
is very reasonable (for one calendar year), less than pickatime, and we ar=
e able to schedule as much as we want under the one fee structure. This on=
e was user friendly on administration, teacher, and parent. Any technical q=
uestions were answered/resolved very quickly.
I tried the pickatime trial last year and used a free online scheduler last=
year, but this one by far was tops in my book.

Re: ised-l Parent Conference Scheduling Software

We have used www.canyoncreeksoftware.com for three years, and it has been a=
hit with parents and teachers. The uploads required from the SIS are eas=
y to pull (we also use Whipplehill), and, at least at the time we compared =
prices, it was much less expensive than pickatime. It is more basic, but =

Joan,
We've used Virtual Paragon for the last few years and it has been great.
Usually when we post the opening of sign up for conferences, they are about
80% filled by the next day. Very easy for parents to use.

Re: ised-l Parent Conference Scheduling Software

Hello:

We recently used pickatime.com for this purpose and were pleased for the
most part. We use Whipple Hill and the integration between the two pieces
of software made it pretty easy to set up. I would take a look at the set
up first before going this way if you are not going to integrate it with
Whipple Hill or another online SIS which they partner with for this
purpose. You need to import teachers, students and classes for the system
to work and then you can set up slots, modify specific teacher schedules

Re: Setting up an Email Server - Help for Bernadette Roche

Hello, all,

Some quick thoughts as I wrestle my way out of a tryptophan-induced haze:

If I understand this correctly, she is looking at a few things here:

1. Existing systems failure;
2. Data recovery from backups;
3. Possibly, virus/malware issues that contributed to the systems failure;
4. Possibly, backups that contain the virus/malware
5. The need to get a new email system in place;
6. Possibly (depending on her choice for an email solution) the need to rebuild the email server.

The existing backups need to be scanned for any viruses/malware.

Once that is done, and she has good information about the integrity of the backups, she can move forward with the data recovery.

Realistically, though, I would also want to look at the other computers in her network. It sounds like there are are some virus/malware issues at play here, and I'd want to get a clearer sense of what is happening on the network before rebuilding.

I hope this helps, and that the recovery process runs smoothly.

Cheers,

Bill

Subject:Setting up an Email Server - Help for Bernadette Roche

Hi All,
Bernadette Roche sent me this via Twitter. She does not have email, or she would have posted this query herself.

She asked...

Sorry to bug on a holiday break. Have you ever set up a server?

It's email server, so think Im going 2 have 2 hire sum1 2 restore it cmpletly. Prob cn do OS myself, but exchange itself looks 2 complicated

And also posted further explanation via twitter. Can anyone offer her advice? I'll forward anything to her.

Further tweets:
So it's been an "entertaining" (using term loosely) #eduit week - boss' MB crashed just out of warranty. Virus clogging bandwidth.

AND exchange box MB, controller and both hard drives crashed. Yes, all in one #eduit week.

So now contemplating exchange box. Unchartered waters - pondering what I can do by myself and what I need to call in assistance for.

1 HD will arrive Fri. Can I load OS on it without 2nd HD? Is loading OS on server same as desktop/laptop?

Also have slipstream disc of original configs 4 server. Wondering abt using that on new HD. Is this like imaging a desktop/laptop?

ive a backup of exchange data 2 B restored, but dont know how "unique" exchange is 4 a newbie 2 install or do i call in the big guns?

Thanks in advance,
Jayme

Setting up an Email Server - Help for Bernadette Roche

Hi All,
Bernadette Roche sent me this via Twitter. She does not have email, or she =
would have posted this query herself.

She asked...

Sorry to bug on a holiday break. Have you ever set up a server?

It's email server, so think Im going 2 have 2 hire sum1 2 restore it cmplet=
ly. Prob cn do OS myself, but exchange itself looks 2 complicated

And also posted further explanation via twitter. Can anyone offer her advic=
e? I'll forward anything to her.

Further tweets:
So it's been an "entertaining" (using term loosely) #eduit week - boss' MB =
crashed just out of warranty. Virus clogging bandwidth.

AND exchange box MB, controller and both hard drives crashed. Yes, all in o=
ne #eduit week.

So now contemplating exchange box. Unchartered waters - pondering what I ca=
n do by myself and what I need to call in assistance for.

1 HD will arrive Fri. Can I load OS on it without 2nd HD? Is loading OS on =
server same as desktop/laptop?

Also have slipstream disc of original configs 4 server. Wondering abt using=
that on new HD. Is this like imaging a desktop/laptop?

ive a backup of exchange data 2 B restored, but dont know how "unique" exch=
ange is 4 a newbie 2 install or do i call in the big guns?

Thanks in advance,
Jayme

We use Websense Web Filter which blocks by category, so whether they try
