Re: Google Voice

Thank you ALL!!

I've received a few now that I won't use.

I used Elizabeth's invitation, so all the rest will remain unused so as
to not waste them.

Thanks again,

21st Century Skills at Traditional Schools

Dear Colleagues,

I am working on a project that considers how independent schools that
promise a "traditional" experience have positioned themselves relative
to the 21st century schools, skills, and values movement. Please
reply off list if you have observations on any of the following:

1. What tactics, programs, or policies labeled 'traditional' at your
school contribute most to 21st century success?
2. Have some curricular or pedagogical approaches once seen as a
strength required revision or enhancement in light of changes in
university expectations of our graduates and the economic climate our
alumni will live and work in?
3. How do your school's core values fit in the broader conversation
about 21st century skills?

Best wishes in 2010 to all!

Sincerely,

Chad Barnett

Job Posting--Assistant Director at Global Youth Leadership Institute

Hello ISED-ers,

Please pass along to anyone you know who may be interested.

Global Youth Leadership Institute Seeks a Full-Time Assistant Director
GYLI seeks an Assistant Director to continue to develop and implement
leading-edge student/teacher programs that build transformational
leadership, global awareness and social entrepreneurship in each
participant. GYLI has maintained a vibrant sense of community since its
founding in 2002. As a positive response to the events of 9/11/2001, a
small group of educators gathered in Chicago to envision new ways of
building student and teacher leaders in schools. That vision has grown to a
unique sequence of summer institutes and year round programs that include
students and teachers from 5 continents.

GYLI currently works with over 35 schools in the US, Canada, Europe, India,
China, Costa Rica, and Nigeria. Our schools include every sector: public,
private, religious, boarding, and international. GYLI has recently adopted
a new mission to reflect its growth and development: Global Youth Leadership
Institute delivers transformative educational programs that foster global
pluralism, collaborative leadership, and environmental care, helping
students and teachers become fully engaged citizens of the world. As we
continue to reach more schools and refine our programs, GYLI will be a
platform, laboratory, and gathering point for social change through students
and teachers around the world.

Assistant Director:
GYLI seeks an Assistant Director to be based in Milwaukee who will help the
organization achieve its mission and strategic goals. The GYLI Assistant
Director oversees all aspects of the GYLI day-to-day operation including
curriculum development, enrollment, marketing and school outreach, program
logistics, staff hiring and training. The Assistant Director represents
GYLI at regional, national and international events and conferences. As the
face and voice of GYLI for many schools and organizations, the Assistant
Director must understand and embody the GYLI mission. Working closely with
the GYLI Executive Director, the Assistant Director also shapes the short
and long-term vision of GYLI and will help position the organization for
long-term sustainability.

Qualifications: Significant experience in a youth leadership program,
outdoor program or other related experience at the director or associate
director level is expected. A bachelor's degree in a related field and
fluency in two or more languages are each preferred. GYLI's enrollment and
outreach process is highly personalized and high volume. Thus we seek
candidates who can create and implement effective marketing and outreach
methods, deliver program content at workshops and institutes, and maintain
high levels of communication with current and new schools.

Additionally, the appointee is likely to be:
. A confident leader, with presence and personal
warmth
. Strong communication skills, written and oral,
informal and formal
. Skilled at managing and interpreting data and at
using current and past research to inform program and marketing decisions.
. An open, honest style
. Willingness and desire to travel in the US and
internationally.
. Someone who is accessible and personable, as well
as strategic and forward thinking; willing to be a strong ambassador and
advocate for GYLI

The expected start date of the position will be determined by the
availability of the final candidate. Interested candidates should send the
following to the address below by February 1, 2010:
1. Cover letter
2. Resume
3. 2 employment references
4. 2 personal references

Re: Who and what would you choose to help inspire a 'rethinking school' brainstor

Lucy,

Thanks for sharing the links! I listened to the second this morning and will
get to the first later today. Quite inspiring. I would love to hear Larry
Rosenstock have an extended conversation with someone like Bill Moyers. His
thinking about education is very interesting and he appears to be fearless
in expressing his thoughts. Very refreshing.

Re: Who and what would you choose to help inspire a 'rethinking school' brainstor

Liz,

Thanks for sharing the link. The student voices come through clearly in the
posts. My older son and I were discussion schools the other day, and he
pulled out a handbook he used in his youth counseling work. One section of
the handbook shares ideas for a 'perfect school' collected at a conference
of Washington State students from alternative high schools.

I was struck by how much their thinking aligns with what seems to be to the
model I see coalescing in the thoughts of some progressive educators.

Here are some of their voices.

"We think the perfect school would be a school where the teachers not as
much teachers as they are students, and everybody works in a group together
on the same projects. And the teachers and students would have respect for
each other."

"Student can pursue their learning in or outside of the school, in formal
course work or independent studies. In each case the student writes a
contract with a stated goal of learning."

"The governance of the schools should be handled through your subcommittees,
where anyone can join and participate."

"I want to learn history by like traveling... not traveling, but like going
on field trips, going places - museums and stuff. I don't want to learn from
a book. I want to actually do things."

EduCon 2.2 should help provide some more definition to the new model that is
struggling to emerge from the pedagogical mists.

Re: ISED-L Gathering at Educon 2.2?

Hi Jim,
It isn't fancy, but it* *worked pretty well last year. It is down the stree=
t
from the Windsor Hotel where most people stay. They have an upstairs area
where we put a bunch of tables together. Here is the restaurant info: *TGI
Fridays* 1776 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA=E2=80=8E - (215) =
665-8443=E2=80=8E.
Hopefully I'll be able to meet you all there.

Re: ISED-L Gathering at Educon 2.2?

Hi, Liz

It looks like we have about six of us interested so far (from here and the
ISEN Ning). Would you recommend the Friday's Restaurant again for a Friday
at Five P.M. type of event, or should we research other places to meet?

Thanks!

Re: ISED-L Gathering at Educon 2.2?

I'll be there as well! Looking forward to seeing everyone. This will be my
third Educon and it is a conference I love. I am facilitating a conversation
on "Filter Failure - Getting to the Good stuff" a discussion about
strategies for managing information overload.

There is lots of time to check in and meet people - particularly at lunches.
On Friday night there is a reception at the Science museum and on Saturday
night they have Philly Cheese steaks at SLA and then they reserve a private
room at a local bar for people to socialize. If you want to organize a
dinner - Last year we all met on Friday evening at Friday's Restaurant at
about 5pm (which is down the street from the hotel).

I created an educon Twitter list here:
http://twitter.com/lizbdavis/educon2-2
Please let me know if you would like me to add you to it.
Looking forward to seeing lots of you there.

Re: ISED-L Gathering at Educon 2.2?

I'll be there and am also co-leading a conversation about our inquiry-based
elementary science curriculum. We currently self-publish this and are
looking to develop digital tools to accompany the curriculum. We are
currently writing an NSF proposal for this and I am hoping to get feedback
from practitioners on what sorts of resources would be helpful to them.

I've heard so many positive things about Educon. I'm looking forward to this
experience and to possibly meeting some of you!

ISED-L Gathering at Educon 2.2?

Hi, All

I plan to go to Educon 2.2 (http://educon22.wikispaces.com/) where I have a
"conversation" I'm leading. (See below.)

I'm wondering how many other ISED-L and ISEN ning members will be at Educon,
and if it's worth arranging a dinner or get together for the group? We did
the same at NAIS a couple of years ago.

Let me know if there is interest.

Many to Many-- How Entire School Communities Can Collaborate*

Presenter: Jim Heynderickx
Presenter Affiliation: Director of Technology, American School in London

Conversational Focus/Audience: All School Levels

Conversation Description: Clay Shirky has published and presented on several
interesting concepts about how the Internet can enable "many to many"
communications and support. He has also noted that technology tools become
socially interesting when they become technologically boring. The main idea
of this conversation is to discover if his ideas are becoming apparent in
our schools, and specific ways that we could foster their growth. In this
context, we will also review the problems with type of change, and how some
long-term beliefs and structures may need to be reviewed.

Conversational Practice: I'd like this section to have an opening 20-30
minute presentation of the core "many to many" concepts that apply to
schools and learning. This presentation should identify two to four core
types of change, and offer some examples of tools or processes that
facilitate their evolution. The second half of the session should be a
conversation, in that all members of the group should share their own
examples, concerns and experiences in these areas. The presentation and a
summary of the discussion can be published online afterwards.

Re: Convert PPT to Video and add music

Bernadette,
I didn't catch if anybody else has already shared this answer.

Microsoft offers a FREE software package called Producer for =
PowerPoint.
It works essentially very much like MovieMaker. You pull in the slides =
you
want to use and then can easily add titling and soundtrack. Just do a =
quick
search for Producer for PowerPoint and you can download it from MS.

I would recommend Camtasia Studio. It can be used to record the action =
on
your computer screen, plus it comes with a plug in for PowerPoint to =
turn a
presentation into a video file (including all animations, transitions, =
and
sound). You can also easily add sound to the presentation after you have
converted it with Camtasia using the same software.

Re: Online data vaulting

We've been using Barracuda's backup/disaster recovery service for the last
45 days. We backup 'all' our data to a local appliance. Our most critical
data is uploaded to 2 offsite data centers. So far so good... Offsite
storage runs $50 per 100GB a month.
