Re: Web-based Keyboarding Instruction query (typing pal)

I've been playing around with the demo version of Typing Pal, and like what
I see so far. Does it allow you to see how often the students have actually
been on the system doing the exercises? This is a big issue, as I'm looking
for a way to make keyboard practice *enforced homework* rather than honor
system homework.

Re: Netbook keyboard & dexterity

If I were a betting person, I would wager that within the next few years
there will be no need for students to make a transition from a mini
keyboard to a standard one, i.e., from a netbook to a laptop, because
netbooks will have replaced laptops in schools that have adopted or are
thinking about adopting laptops.

I say this because I see netbooks as solving what I still regard as one of
the peskiest issues with traditional laptops: their relatively hefty size
and weight. If the trend in netbooks continues, their weight will
eventually be measured in ounces rather than pounds. This will be huge.
This could finally allow all students to carry the thing comfortably and
be able to put it in a locker comfortably. I see this as huge. There are
already netbooks out there that fit in a large pocket and weigh barely
more than a pound.

Yes, the ever-shrinking keyboard will not be ideal, but I suspect that
students will have larger computers at home and the tradeoff of size for
extreme portability will be too hard to resist. What I don't know is
whether netbooks will be just another stop on the road to even smaller
devices that students will routinely use.

But as David said, everyone adapts.

Re: Netbook keyboard & dexterity

Hmm...haven't been there myself, but I'm thinking that the transition from a
mini keyboard to a standard one has to be a lot shorter than the transition
from no keyboard at all to a standard one.

Re: Netbook keyboard & dexterity

We've had some anecdotal complaints in transition, but everyone adapts. I'm old enough to
remember there was a lot of complaining when transitioning from manual to electric
typewriters and from electromechanical keyboards to computer keyboards. It really doesn't
take long to transition from a netbook to a laptop or vice versa.

Dipont Education is interested in creating some partnerships with
boarding schools and with day schools which might be interested in
Chinese students under a home stay program. This would be an F1 visa

They are also interested in exchanges and cooperative programs between

Focus on Living: Touring HIV/AIDS educational exhibit

Reservations are being accepted for the touring educational exhibit,"Focus
on Living: Portraits of Americans with HIV/AIDS."

Focus on Living showcases sixteen Americans living with HIV and AIDS and
offers schools an important resource for HIV/AIDS education.

This touring exhibit is based on the book, Focus on Living, (University of

Focus on Living combines compelling photographs and first-person accounts to
document the feelings and experiences of a wide range of Americans carrying
the HIV virus. Men and women speak candidly about their lives, their
relationships, and how they have come to terms with the presence of this
chronic and potentially deadly disease.

A Blast from the Analog Past: the Dukane V P Matic Filmstrip / Cassette Projecter

A break from all the weighty matters:

Wandering along a country road, I saw a neighbor had left this for the
crows, so I took it home:
http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/topmicrousa_2058_154009171 - it displays
filmstrips on its screen or projects back to the wall, with accompanied
cassette player with great sound. This was clearly built to last
forever, and an example of highly functional, timeless design for analog
tech.

What would you do with such a thing, and are you already doing
anything? My ideas:

* For Creative Writing / Theater classes to produce and record "Mystery
Science Theater" type commentary to accompany vintage filmstrips, and
only one unit would be needed (this would be for the class as an audience).
NEEDED: A source of vintage film strips for sale, perhaps a school
district A/V closet or the Library of Congress, and maybe another unit
or two.

* For Social Studies / Fine Arts classes to develop student-curated
kiosks with cassette commentary that could be placed around the school.
NEEDED: A film developer who can develop Kodak EB 3 filmstrips (or an
equivalent).

* For art class project, where each student gets a blank section of
filmstrip (or an existing filmstrip) to manually sketch upon or distress
in a creative way. I envision these displayed in an art show,
accompanied by the music of the student's choosing.
NEEDED: Vintage or blank filmstrips.

A school would need handful of these units for a proper movable feast,
staged in various community locations, banks, etc. - there are people
selling them online for $30-$50, but it looks like once they are offered
for sale, they move pretty fast.

Mimio interactive whiteboards

Is anybody out there that is (or that has considered) using the Mimio
portable interactive whiteboard devices? On paper they seem to have a lot
going for them: primarily that they are portable and less expensive. Both
of those are strong considerations for my school, as we are just introducing
smart-board-type tech and don't yet have the budget to place devices
everywhere. The Mimio could be moved to any room where a teacher wanted to
use it for a lesson. When it isn't being used it can be folded and stored
on a bookshelf. It is hard to see the negatives but I'm guessing they are
out there. Anybody have practical experience or advice on this? Are there
other brands that have similar portability in their design? We are
(probably) not looking to put a SmartBoard-type device on a rolling stand
due to the physical restrictions of our school (no storage areas, no
elevator to move between floors).

We have one Promethean board and were told it would cost $1500 to move it to
a new room (and that if we didn't have professional moved it would void the
warrantee)!

Feel free to reply off-list.

Re: Subs using Technology

In my life as a former tech director, we had a "sub" ID. This ID could
access the standard school software on the HD and a "sub" folder in the
teacher's directory. While not ideal this seemed to handle several of
the issues and still keep some security in place.

In the case of long term issues, the sub went through some limited
security training and got a more standard ID.

Re: Subs using Technology

Great Topic! Please keep this public. For now we ask the teachers to
always have alternate plans that do not involve technology and if they
know they will be absent to create a plan that does not involve
computer or laptop use. This comes from our experience of subs not
being familiar with our policies or lack of tech knowledge needed to
implement the tech for the day, and really this is no different than a
teacher not wanting a sub to do an extensive science lab or project
that involves any materials that the sub may not be familiar with.
If we have a long term sub situation, I or our director will meet with
and set up the sub with a login or go over some quick things they may
need to know.

You bring up an interesting point with the smartboards, we have just
implemented ActivBoards in 8 classes and are getting 10 more soon, and
this also needs to be considered. Looking forward to hearing what
others do.

Re: Chrome vs. IE 7(8) vs. Firefox

Hello, Steven,

I would install Firefox and Safari, and be done with it. Both work on Windows and Mac, and FF works on Linux as well. When Chrome gets a stable version for Mac, Linux, and Windows, it will be worth considering in the mix as well. The beta version for the Mac is particularly grabby when it comes to personal info, but I believe this is less of an issue on the other versions.

IE8 is much better than IE7, but that's not saying much. IE is also limited to the Windows platform.

Cheers,

Bill

Questions for the above mentioned browsers: How would you compare them?
Would you recommend installing all three on computers for student use? I've
read that Google Chrome is bad about collecting user information "even
before hitting enter." What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your time,

Re: Drug and Alcohol Education

We use Brenda Conlon who does a drug and alcohol prevention program for a
week each year. The kids love her. She's been doing the program here for
several years.

Charles Poncho Brown is someone that the kids can relate to.

Does anyone know of a good speaker or program/curriculum for drug and

We are looking for something that will actively engage the students,
parents and faculty in conversations about the health, legal and social
implications of risky behavior in regards to drugs and alcohol.

Thanks so much!

Chrome vs. IE 7(8) vs. Firefox

Questions for the above mentioned browsers: How would you compare them?
Would you recommend installing all three on computers for student use? I've
read that Google Chrome is bad about collecting user information "even
before hitting enter." What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your time,

Re: Student Computers on LCD Projector

I've had success using Apple Remote Desktop for viewing the students' =
computers while having my laptop hooked up to the multimedia projector. =
My laptop is wireless with the Apple Extreme Airport, but the lab =
computers are hardwired. The computers are mostly e-Macs running OS =
10.4, with five iMacs running OS 10.5. The only problem I've had is =
with viewing Keynote presentations from the e-Macs with Remote Desktop. =
Remote Desktop will control the Keynote presentation on the students' =
computers, but the images won't show up on my laptop and the projector. =
My Apple rep said that I needed more RAM in the older computers, so I'll =
add that to the computers before school starts. You might want to =
discuss your particular situation with your Apple rep. They are always =
wonderful about helping teachers solve problems. By the way, Apple =
Remote Desktop is very easy to set up and use. I love being able to =
send Word documents with web links to all of the lab computers with one =
click. I can also watch what the students are doing, lock down one or =
any number of computers, take control of the students' computers, and =
show what is on my laptop to all of the students on their computers at =
the same time. I can sit at my desk in the afternoons and do the =
software updates for all of the computers, even Apple computers in other =
classrooms, from my laptop. Great program!

Macs have screen sharing built in to 10.5. A student can easily share =20
their findings by having the teacher pull up whoever's computer is =20
hooked up to the computer or we also use Apple Remote Desktop. =20
Sharing is only one cool thing that that App does.
